Ria Ginster (born April 15, 1898 in Frankfurt am Main , † May 11, 1985 in Zurich ) was a German singer with a soprano voice and a singing teacher .

Life

Ria Ginster was the daughter of the pianist and choir conductor Peter Ginster. She attended the Lyceum and during this time first learned the violin ; at the age of 13 she appeared in public. From 1916 she studied singing at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main and graduated with a concert qualification exam. After further studies at the Berlin Conservatory with Louis Bachner , she passed the state examination . From 1923 she appeared primarily as a lieder singer , and opera arias were also part of her repertoire. She gave concerts in Germany, Austria, Belgium, Holland, France, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Italy and Switzerland, among others. In 1931 she toured England and sang at the Royal Opera House under the direction of Thomas Beecham as a soloist in the Messiah ; after further successes in London, including in the Wigmore Hall , he received a recording contract with His Master's Voice . From 1934 she toured the United States and Canada; In 1935 she performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City and received a record deal with RCA-Victor . In 1937 she interpreted the soprano solo in the 9th Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven at the Salzburg Festival . In 1936 and 1941 she sang world premieres of songs by Othmar Schoeck . She has performed with well-known conductors such as Wilhelm Furtwängler , Bruno Walter , Otto Klemperer , John Barbirolli and Herbert von Karajan .

Ria Ginster was appointed professor and head of the concert training class at the Zurich Conservatory in 1938. She also taught as visiting professor at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles , in Philadelphia and from 1947 in New York. From 1949 to 1956, after being appointed by Bernhard Paumgartner , she gave master classes at the Mozarteum . She led the concert training class in Zurich for over 30 years, and her students include Ursula Buckel , Sylvia Gähwiller , Kurt Widmer and Hilde Zadek .
