Sylvia Gähwiller (born July 5, 1909 in Zurich ; † March 19, 1999 in Zurich) was a Swiss singer with a soprano voice and vocal teacher .

Sylvia Gähwiller studied piano at the Musikhochschule Breslau from 1926 to 1928, piano at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin from 1927 to 1928 and piano with Friedrich Wührer and composition with Karl Weigl in Vienna from 1928 to 1930 . In 1932 she passed the piano diploma . From 1936 to 1941 she had vocal training with Ria Ginster at the Zurich Conservatory . After that she was engaged at the Stadttheater St. Gallen until 1942 , where she continued to appear as a guest until 1947. She made her debut with "Pamina" in The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , other roles were "Konstanze" in The Abduction from the Seraglio , "Countess Almaviva" in Le nozze di Figaro , "Baroness Freimann" in Der Wildschütz , "Mimì" in La Bohème , "Rosina" in Il barbiere di Siviglia , "Elmire" in Erwin and Elmire and the title roles in Martha , Mignon and Snow White by Felix Weingartner after Franz Schubert . In concert operas, she sang "Ilia" in Idomeneo (Lugano, 1944), "Dido" in Dido and Aeneas (Basel, 1949), "Paracha" in Mavra (Zurich, 1951), "Le Renard" and "La Sœur jumelle ”in Les Malheurs d'Orphée by Darius Milhaud (Basel, 1953) and“ Poppea ”in L'incoronazione di Poppea (Zurich, 1955).

She became internationally known primarily as a concert and lied singer . She has interpreted classical works by Johann Sebastian Bach , Georg Friedrich Händel , Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as well as contemporary works by, for example, Paul Hindemith , Willy Burkhard , Arthur Honegger , Alban Berg , Maurice Ravel , Béla Bartók , Ernst Krenek and others Arnold Schoenberg .

Sylvia Gähwiller can be heard on several sound recordings, for example under the direction of Walter Goehr as “Cleopatra” in Giulio Cesare in Egitto and as “Poppea” in L'incoronazione di Poppea as well as the singer in Othmar Schoeck plays Othmar Schoeck and in the Zürcher Liederbuch 1986 . Her students include the singers Carmen Anhorn , Jacqueline Bügler, Barbara Geiser-Peyer, Hedy Graf, Kathrin Graf, Hedda Heusser and Barbara Martig-Tüller as well as the baritones Hans Riediker and Niklaus Tüller. The conductor Fritz Näf studied solo singing with her.
