Ninette de Valois
Dame Ninette de Valois , OM , CH , DBE (born June 6, 1898 as Edris Stannus in County Wicklow , Ireland , † March 8, 2001 in London ), was a classical ballet dancer and the founder of the Royal Ballet .
Life
Edris Stannus began her education at the age of 10 at the Lila Field Academy in London. In 1921 she officially changed her name to Ninette de Valois. She reached the first high point of her career as a dancer for Djagilev's Ballets Russes , for which she danced from 1923 to 1925.
A year later she ended her career as a dancer. She founded a ballet school and worked as a choreographer for the Festival Theater in Cambridge , the Abby Theater in Dublin and the Vic-Wells Ballet at Sadler's Wells Theater in London, directed by Lilian Baylis , which became the Royal Ballet in 1956 . She directed the Royal Ballet until 1963.
