Herbert J. Sadler

Herbert J. Sadler (born September 6, 1894 in Bristol , † April 21, 1955 in Winnipeg ) was a Canadian organist, music teacher and composer.

Sadler came to Winnipeg with his parents in 1911 and was trained as an organist at St Peter's Anglican Church . He was organist at St George's and St Peter's Anglican Churches from 1915 to 1917 and then served overseas with the Medical Corps until 1920 . After that he was organist at Westminster United Church until his death . In the 1920s he completed his training with Hugh Ross , Douglas Clark and Hugh Bancroft .

In addition to his own compositions, he also performed large choral works such as Mozart's Requiem and Dvořák's Stabat Mater at Westminster Church . As an organist, he performed on Vesper Hour , a weekly radio broadcast, from 1929 to 1938 . During the Second World War he conducted the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir with Filmer Hubble . With an expanded choir of the Metropolitan Church he led a. a. Arthur Sullivan's cantata The Golden Legend .

In addition, Sadler was a sought-after teacher. His numerous students include the musicians Barry Anderson , Eila Buchanan Alford , Allan Borbridge , Minnie Boyd , Beth Cooil , Evelyn Gregory , Frans Niermeier , Edith Patterson , Maurine Pottruff , Mary Scarlett Wood , B. Franklin Shinn and Helen M. Young .
