Philipp Wüst

Philipp Wüst (born May 3, 1894 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein , † October 12, 1975 in Saarbrücken ) was a German conductor and composer.

The son of a baker had violin, piano and organ lessons during his school days. He attended the teacher training college in Speyer and worked as a teacher in Landau until 1914 and in Friesenheim until 1921. He studied composition and conducting in Mannheim and became a choir repetitor at the Nationaltheater Mannheim with general music director Felix Lederer . From 1922 to 1925 he was Kapellmeister at the Stadttheater Saarbrücken.

He then became music director in Bremerhaven, in 1932 regional music director in Oldenburg, and from 1933 to 1936 general music director at the Mannheim National Theater. Afterwards he was general music director at the National Theater and head of the Silesian Music Festival in Breslau until 1943 and general music director at the Württemberg State Theater in Stuttgart until 1945 .

In 1946 he directed a performance of Gluck's opera Orfeo for the reopening of the Saarbrücken City Theater, of which he was general music director from 1948 to 1964. From 1965 he held a professorship for conducting at the Saarbrücken University of Music. As a composer he emerged with chamber music and orchestral works. In 1964 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class.
