José Cubiles

José Antonio Cubiles Ramos (born May 15, 1894 in Cádiz , † April 5, 1971 in Madrid ) was a Spanish pianist and music teacher .

Cubiles began playing the piano at the age of five and was encouraged by the director of the Cádiz Music School because of his great talent. At the Conservatory of Madrid he then studied with Pilar Fernández de la Mora with the support of Infanta Doña Isabel de Borbón and received prizes in the subjects of music theory, harmony and piano. He later took lessons from Louis Diémer in Paris . In 1914 he received first prize in piano at the Conservatoire de Paris , and two years later he began teaching at the Madrid Conservatory. His students included Joaquín Achúcarro , Guillermo González , María Orán and Manuel Carra .

Cubiles also pursued a successful career as a pianist: he had solo appearances, played piano concerts as a soloist and worked as a chamber musician with Jacques Thibaud , Paul Kochanski and Gaspar Cassadó , among others . His interpretations of the works of Spanish composers such as Isaac Albéniz , Enrique Granados and Joaquín Turina or Fryderyk Chopin became famous . A close friendship connected him with Manuel de Falla , who entrusted him with the world premiere of his Noches en los jardines de España in 1916 with the Madrid Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Enrique Fernández Arbós .
