Manuel Carra

Manuel Carra Fernández (born April 2, 1931 in Málaga ) is a Spanish pianist, composer and music teacher.

Carra studied with María Luisa Soriano and Julia Torras in Málaga and from 1947 with José Cubiles in Madrid. He later attended courses at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena with Lazare Lévy and Ruggero Gerlin and studied music analysis with Olivier Messiaen at the Conservatoire de Paris . He was active as a concert pianist and taught at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Madrid for more than fifty years .

He was a co-founder of the Grupo Nueva Música , which included composers Cristóbal Halffter , Antón García Abril , Luis de Pablo , Ramón Barce and Alberto Blancafort . His piano concerto became famous with the Passacaglia movement dedicated to Alban Berg . In 1998 Carra became a member of the music section of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes of San Fernando. The conservatory in his hometown awarded him an honorary professorship.
