Joaquín Achúcarro (born November 1, 1932 in Bilbao ) is a Spanish pianist and music teacher .

Achúcarro attended the Conservatory of Bilbao and made his pianist debut in his hometown in 1946 with a piano concerto by Mozart . He began studying physics at the University of Madrid , but then moved to the city's conservatory and eventually studied at the Accademia Chiagena in Italy. Before he was 20, he won the Marguerite Long Competition , the Geneva International Competition, the Viotti Competition and the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition . He also took piano lessons with José Cubiles , Walter Gieseking and Nikita Magaloff, among others .

In 1959 he won the International Competition in Liverpool and then made his debut with the London Symphony Orchestra . A long international career as a concert pianist followed. Since the late 1980s, Achúcarro has taught at Southern Methodist University in Texas. He received several prizes in Spain, including the Premio Nacional de Música and was raised to the nobility by the Spanish king in 1996. UNESCO named him Artist for Peace 2000 , the city of Bilbao an honorary citizen, and he received the Universal Basque from the Basque government .
