Infanta Isabella of Spain , Doña Isabel de Borbón y Borbón, Infanta de España (born December 20, 1851 in the Palacio Real in Madrid , †  April 23,  1931 in Paris ) was a member of the Spanish line of the House of Bourbon . She was heir to the Spanish royal crown twice, from 1851 to 1857 and from 1874 to 1880, as Princess of Asturias .

Her full baptismal name was: María Isabel Francisca de Asís Cristina Francisca de Paula Fernanda Luisa Josefa Trinidad Joaquina Ana Melchora Gaspara Baltasara María del Olvido Dolores Pilar Concepción Carmen Desamparados Filomena Micaela Rafaela Gabriela Dominga de la Cogolla Tomasa la Rita María de la Cogolla Tomasa de la Rita Isidra Rosalía Polonia Lugarda Ramona de Cosme Damiana Antonia de San Antón Juana Bautista Vicenta de Ferrer Genara Francisca de Borja Blasa Jacoba de Roque Caralampia y de Todos los Santos .

Life

Isabella was the eldest daughter of the Spanish Queen Isabella II (1830-1904) and her Prince Consort Francis of Assisi (1822-1902), eldest son of Francisco de Paula de Borbón and Princess Luisa Carlotta of Bourbon-Sicily . Her maternal grandparents were King Ferdinand VII and his fourth wife, Princess Maria Christina of Sicily . Her godparents were the last reigning Duke of Parma , Piacenza and Guastalla , Robert I , and his sister Margarethe Maria, Duchess of Madrid. She got her first communion in Rome from Pope Pius IX. .

On May 13, 1868, Infanta Isabella married her cousin (second degree) in Madrid, Prince Gaetano of Bourbon-Sicily (1846–1871), Count of Girgenti, fourth son of King Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies and his second wife, Archduchess Maria Theresia of Austria . The marriage remained childless; her husband suffered from depression and committed suicide in 1871 in Lucerne suicide .

After her parents were expelled from Spain in September 1868, she grew up in Vienna and Paris. Her mother renounced the Spanish crown on June 25, 1870 in favor of her brother Alfons XII. who ascended the throne in 1875 after the re-establishment of the monarchy . Princess Isabella then returned to Spain and lived alternately in Madrid, Seville and Paris.
