Daniel Guilet
Daniel Guilet ( Daniel "Dotka" Guilevitch ; born January 10, 1899 in Rostov , † October 14, 1990 in New York City ) was a French-American violinist and music teacher of Russian origin.
Life
Guilet grew up in Paris and was a student of George Enescu and Guillaume Remy at the Conservatoire de Paris . He first played in the Calvet Quartet and appeared as a soloist and accompanist for Maurice Ravel . In 1941 he came to the USA and became known there as a chamber musician with his Guilet String Quartet . In 1944 he became a member of Arturo Toscanini's NBC Symphony Orchestra , whose concertmaster he was from 1951 until Toscanini's resignation in 1954.
Then Guilet founded a trio with the pianist Menahem Pressler and the cellist Bernard Greenhouse , which debuted in Tanglewood in 1955 and became famous as the Beaux Arts Trio . He led the trio until 1969, after which he devoted himself to teaching at Indiana University , the Manhattan School of Music , the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, the University of Oklahoma and Baylor University . Guilet played a violin made by Giuseppe Guarneri , named after him "ex Guilet" and later played by David Oistrach , Henryk Szeryng and Joshua Bell , among others .
