Felipe Gutiérrez y Espinosa
Felipe Gutiérrez y Espinosa (born May 26, 1825 in San Juan , † November 27, 1899 ibid) was a Puerto Rican composer.
Espinosa received his first music lessons from his father and then continued to educate himself. In 1845 he became a musician, in 1853 Kapellmeister in the orchestra of the Regimiento de Iberia . 1856 was the first opera with a material from the Caribbean Guaroex to La Palma del Cacique by Alejandro Tapia y Rivera . In addition to two other operas and a zarzuela, Espinosa composed numerous church music works as well as dances and songs. From 1858 to 1898 he was Kapellmeister at the Capilla de la Santa Iglesia Catedral in San Juan. He also worked as a conductor and founded a music academy where he taught music theory, solfège, singing and instrumental music.
