Lorenzo Alvary

Lorenzo Alvary , also Lorenz Alvari (born February 20, 1909 in Debrecen , Hungary , † December 13, 1996 in New York ) was a Hungarian-American opera singer ( bass ).

Life

Born in Hungary, Alvary first studied law in Geneva and Budapest , then singing in Milan and Berlin . He made his operatic debut in 1934 at the Royal Opera in Budapest. In 1937 he got an engagement at the Vienna State Opera . In 1938 he emigrated to the USA , where he became an American citizen in 1944. In the USA he made his debut at the San Francisco Opera in 1939 in a leading role in Der Rosenkavalier , where he returned regularly until 1977. In 1942 he got an engagement at the Metropolitan Opera in New York until 1961 and extended this from 1962 to 1972 and again from 1977 to 1978, where he said goodbye at the age of 69.
