action

The 30-year-old Count Gil has only recently been married to Susanne, who is ten years his junior. When he notices the smell of cigarettes in her private room, he is seized with jealousy. He thinks his wife has a lover. The fact that Susanne often looks embarrassed when he comes home in the evening encourages him to believe that she is cheating on him.

Gil plans to set a trap for Susanne to convict her of infidelity. He says goodbye to her and leaves the house, but returns shortly afterwards. He was not mistaken; he smells cigarette smoke all over the house. Furious, he rummaged through all the objects behind which the supposed rival could be hiding, but found nothing incriminating. Finally, his wife is able to convince him that his “rival” consists only of cigarettes. Out of sheer boredom, she gave herself to this vice.

Gil apologizes to Susanne because of his baseless jealousy. For the sake of his wife he now starts smoking himself; and the dumb servant also decides to indulge in this vice from now on.
