life and work

Friedrich Haider is a graduate of the Anton Bruckner Private University Linz (piano with Martha Picker and conducting with Leopold Mayer), the Vienna University of Music (conducting with Karl Österreicher ) and the International Summer Academy Salzburg (master class with Milan Horvat ). He made his theatrical debut on July 26, 1984 in Klagenfurt with Johann Strauss ' Wiener Blut . In the same year he presented himself for the first time at the podium of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra in the concert hall. After various positions as an assistant, he developed a repertoire at mainly smaller opera houses that today comprises more than 60 titles and combines a wide variety of subjects and styles.

Haider devoted himself repeatedly to the Italian Belcanto , with his discovery of Roberto Devereux von Donizetti gaining personal success - most recently in 2004 at the Bavarian State Opera. After his successful debut at the Vienna State Opera in 2002 , he conducted repertoire performances at this house for seven seasons, including three traditional New Year's Eve performances of Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus. In 2006 he made his debut at New York's Metropolitan Opera with Verdi's Rigoletto , and in 2011 he accepted his first invitation to the Berlin State Opera (Mozart: Die Entführung aus dem Serail ).

The highlights of his theater work to date include Verdi's Otello (at the Tivoli Festival Copenhagen), Gounod's Faust (at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich), Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail (at the Semperoper Dresden), Wagner's Lohengrin (in Barcelona) and Tristan and Isolde (in Nice) as well as Strauss ' Salome (at the National Opera Tokyo) and Weber's Freischütz (at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice).

Haider was a guest conductor a. a. the following orchestras: London Symphony, Czech Philharmonic, Dresdner Staatskapelle , Bruckner Orchestra Linz , Gothenburg Symphony, Milan Chamber Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic and Symphonic.

From 1991 to 1994 Haider was chief conductor of the Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg .

Haider has maintained close, friendly contact with the Austrian artist Ernst Fuchs since 1971 . He collects Fuchs' early work (1945 to 1960s) and has also published about it.

Haider is married. Before that, he had a long relationship with Edita Gruberová , A1 with whom he also worked closely professionally. Both of them founded a music label in 1992 that published bel canto parts by the singer. Both separated in 2007.

Oviedo Filarmonia

In 2004 Haider became chief conductor of Oviedo Filarmonia in northern Spain . A position he held with two contract extensions until 2011. He performed 30 concert programs with the orchestra and made guest appearances in Madrid, Tokyo (Bunka Kaikan Hall) and Paris ( Théâtre des Champs-Élysées ). For the Naxos label he recorded with the orchestra Giuseppe Verdi's Otello and several works by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari . In 2011 Haider was awarded the gold medal of the Auditorium Principe Felipe for his work .

Works by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari

In 2002 Haider came across a score from Wolf-Ferrari's opera buffa Il segreto di Susanna (Susanne's secret) in a London second-hand bookshop . He revised the score and put the work on the program of a concert with the Münchner Rundfunkorchester (Judith Howarth, Renato Bruson , Münchner Rundfunkorchester, Munich 2003).

In 2008 the CD label “Philartis Vienna” released the one-act opera Il segreto di Susanna (Judith Howard, Angel Oden, Oviedo Filarmonia) and the world premiere of the composer's orchestral suites. In Farao Classics his recording 26 (soloist: Benjamin Schmid) appeared as the beginning of a "Wolf-Ferrari Edition" of the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D major op., A photograph with the Prize of the German Record Critics (Quarterly List 2013/1) was awarded. At the Slovak National Theater in Bratislava , Haider conducted the Slovak premiere of Wolf-Ferrari's I gioielli della Madonna ( The Madonna's Jewelry ) in 2015 .

Slovak National Theater

On August 1st, 2012 Haider took over the position of music director at the Slovak National Theater in Bratislava. This title combined the position of opera director with that of chief conductor. In accordance with the personal wish of the Minister of Culture, Marek Maďarič , Haider wanted to face the challenge of making the house competitive in Europe. Representatives of the German director's theater as Peter Konwitschny , Hans Joachim Ruckhäberle or Martin students were premieres of Puccini 's La Boheme , Richard Strauss ' Salome and Verdi 's Rigoletto also tied to the house as soloists with international operations. Haider's new productions of Wagner's Lohengrin and Mozart 's La clemenza di Tito were awarded the Slovak critics' prize. At the beginning of 2015, the Ministry of Culture cut the budget at the National Theater and, almost at the same time, increased the salaries of the neighboring Philharmonic by a total of 1.5 million euros. Haider took the ministry's unwillingness to justify this approach as an opportunity to resign from the position of music director in June 2016. In the following season Haider became Principal Guest Conductor of the Theater and Philharmonic Essen .

Musicae Antiquae Collegium Varsoviense

On the occasion of a new production of Mozart's Cosi fan tutte at the Warsaw Chamber Opera in January 2017, Haider conducted the Musicae Antiquae Collegium Varsoviense for the first time . The performances were followed by a re-invitation with Mozart's Magic Flute . For the opening of the Warsaw Mozart Festival 2017, Haider conducted the orchestra again in a concert performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni in the National Philharmonic in Warsaw and was subsequently appointed its chief conductor on September 1, 2017.
