Martin Schüler (* 1958 in Finsterwalde / Niederlausitz ) is a German opera director and general manager of the Cottbus State Theater .

career

The pupil first attended the Dresden Cross School as a crucian . He then studied opera directing at the "Hanns Eisler" University of Music in Berlin and graduated as a director.

In 1984 he became a master student of Ruth Berghaus in Berlin at the Academy of Arts of the GDR . As an assistant and collaborator, he accompanied her and Sigrid Neef at times when GDR citizens were barely able to go to western countries, including to productions at the opera houses in Paris , Hamburg , Cardiff , West Berlin and Frankfurt am Main . From 1986 to 1990 he went to the Landestheater Halle as a director .

In 1991, Schüler moved to the Cottbus State Theater and was initially director of the opera under Christoph Schroth . Since 2003 he has also been the director of the house.

Guest productions have taken him to the opera houses in Graz, Bremen, Saarbrücken, Bratislava and Mannheim.

In Cottbus, Schüler also collaborated between the drama and orchestra divisions, including in productions with the complete drama music for A Midsummer Night's Dream (Mendelssohn Bartholdy), Peer Gynt (Grieg) and Der Sturm (Sibelius).

Martin Schüler teaches in Zurich and Leipzig and advised the Rheinsberg Castle Chamber Opera . He is also a member of the board of the Brandenburg Cultural Foundation Cottbus.
