Shaun Richard Maloney (born January 24, 1983 in Miri , Malaysia ) is a former Scottish football player .

Career

After various positions as a youth player, the striker landed at Celtic Glasgow at the age of 16 , where he soon signed his first professional contract. Despite his tremendous talent, Maloney never got beyond substitute status.

It was not until the summer of 2005, under the new coach Gordon Strachan , that he developed into an integral part of the team and fought for a regular position as a left winger. After the 2005/06 season, Maloney was voted the best player in the Scottish Premier League and the best junior player in the SPL, which no player had achieved before. In total, he played 104 games and scored 26 times. In January 2007 he was transferred to the English club Aston Villa for 1.1 million pounds . There he came to the end of the 2007/08 season on the status of a supplementary player and returned to Celtic on August 22, 2008. On August 31, 2011, his move to the Premier League club Wigan Athletic was announced, where Maloney signed a contract until the end of June 2013. The contract was prematurely extended for two more years until 2015. From January to August 2015 he played for Chicago Fire in the USA before joining the English second division club Hull City .

Maloney was part of the Scottish national team from 2005 to 2016 .
