Andrew Neil Webster (born April 23, 1982 in Dundee ) is a Scottish professional footballer. He last played for FC St. Mirren .

Webster joined in March 2001 for 75,000 pounds from his youth club FC Arbroath to Heart of Midlothian . After a total of 184 appearances for Hearts, the Lithuanian owner of the club Vladimir Romanov advised him to leave the club in 2006 due to contractual inconsistencies.

Andy Webster became known because he was the first player to use Article 17 of the FIFA regulations, which gives professional footballers a unilateral right of termination after three years with a club in order to change clubs abroad. As compensation to the old club, the player only has to pay the wages that are due until the end of the contract. This innovation is considered the most significant change in the football industry since the Bosman ruling .

In the third year of the four-year contract with the Heart of Midlothian, Webster resigned and in 2006 moved to the English club Wigan Athletic a year before the end of his contract without the permission of his employer at the time. FIFA approved the transfer on September 4, 2006, but decided that the transfer fee should not be determined until a later date despite the existing paragraph 17.

In January 2007 it was announced that the Rangers would sign Webster on loan, whereupon Heart of Midlothian complained formally to FIFA and the Scottish Football Association (SFA) on January 11, 2007. Webster should not be allowed to play because he has already played in Scotland within the last twelve months. However, FIFA decided that this change of club to the Rangers was legally in order and the SFA followed this assessment.

Even so, FIFA ruled in May 2007 that Webster had terminated his contract for no good reason and suspended him for the first two games of the 2007-08 season and ordered him to pay Heart of Midlothian £ 625,000.

On January 30, 2008, the International Court of Justice ruled that the Hearts must be compensated for breach of contract by Webster with 150,000 pounds. The court thereby reduced the compensation payment from the previous amount of 625,000 pounds to the amount Webster would have received as a salary by the end of his regular contract.
