Louis Stanton Auchincloss (born September 27, 1917 in Lawrence , New York , † January 26, 2010 in Manhattan , New York ) was an American writer .

Life

Auchincloss came from an upper class family who owed their wealth to the founder of the family empire, Hugh Auchincloss, a Scottish merchant from Paisley . He grew up in Manhattan and attended the prestigious private school St. Bernard's School , then the elite Groton School , which was founded in 1884 by Endicott Peabody and enjoyed the support of Theodore Roosevelt . From 1935, Auchincloss studied law at Yale University , where he gave his interest in English and French literature a lot and published the Yale Literary Magazine . In 1938 he dropped out of Yale without a degree and continued it at the University of Virginia School of Law in Charlottesville . He then worked for the law firm Sullivan and Cromwell, writing novels, short stories and non-fiction books while working as a lawyer.

Works

Auchincloss has been extremely productive as a writer. In 30 novels and 15 short stories, he described the world of high society from which he himself came. He became best known through the multi-generation sagas The House of Five Talents , Portrait in Brownstone and East Side Story, and The Rector , a story about a schoolmaster, obviously inspired by his own time at Endicott Peabody's Groton School and The Society of the Rich , a crime thriller from the world of pinstripes. In 1965 Auchincloss was admitted to the American Academy of Arts and Letters , in 1997 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , and in 2005 he received the National Medal of Arts .
