Wolfgang Funkel (born August 10, 1958 in Neuss ) is a German soccer coach and former soccer player .
Player career
Wolfgang Funkel began his football career with the local club VfR Neuss . He then played in the Oberliga Nordrhein with Viktoria Goch , moved to the second division promoted Rot-Weiß Oberhausen , played from 1984 at Bayer 05 Uerdingen and most recently at 1. FC Kaiserslautern . Between 1991 and 1995 Funkel played 95 Bundesliga games for Kaiserslautern in the first division. The defender has played a total of 305 Bundesliga games for Bayer 05 Uerdingen and 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, he won the bronze medal with the German Olympic selection . The team was then honored with the silver bay leaf . The defender was twice on the ball for the DFB A-team in 1986.
Coaching career
His coaching career began like his active career as a player at VfR Neuss in the regional league during the 1997/98 season. Then Funkel was assistant trainer at Rot-Weiß Oberhausen .
From June 2001 to June 2005 he was with the Bundesliga club Hansa Rostock as assistant coach to his brother Friedhelm Funkel and under contract with Juri Schlünz .
From November 23, 2005 to April 11, 2007, Funkel was Wolfgang Wolf's assistant trainer at 1. FC Kaiserslautern . Together with Wolf, he acquired a coaching license at the Cologne Sports University in 1997. After Wolf's dismissal, he temporarily acted as head coach at 1. FC Kaiserslautern, before he moved back into the second ranks after Kjetil Rekdal was signed for the 2007/08 season. Funkel still had a contract with FCK until June 30, 2008, but was released on February 9, 2008 together with head coach Rekdal for the rest of the contract period.

The trained tiler Wolfgang Funkel is married and has two children.
His brother, Friedhelm Funkel , was also a professional soccer player and is now a soccer coach.
