Thomas Kristl (born April 18, 1963 in Regensburg ) is a former German soccer player and current coach .

career

Kristl completed a total of 71 Bundesliga games in his active time as a soccer player for 1. FC Nürnberg and 1. FC Saarbrücken , in which he scored 11 goals. In 1994 he had to end his career due to an injury. Three years later, Kristl began to work as a coach for the regional division club FC Schnaittach , which he led into the regional league . On January 3, 2006 , he started working as an assistant coach at the Bundesliga club Hannover 96 . When the club terminated the contract with Peter Neururer , the contract with Kristl was also terminated. In April 2007 Kristl started working for FC Amberg, which was threatened with relegation . After the end of the season he left FC Amberg, but returned to him in April 2008. Both times he held the league with FC Amberg. For the 2008/09 season he was the coach of his home club SSV Jahn Regensburg , who put him on leave on November 24, 2008.

On July 11, 2009, Kristl became the new assistant coach of the Austrian Bundesliga team SK Sturm Graz under Franco Foda . Kristl crowned his first season in 2009/2010 with the ÖFB Cup. Before he became champion on May 25, 2011 as assistant coach with the Austrian Bundesliga club SK Sturm Graz. Kristl took over the position of Foda on April 14, 2012 and completed the 2011/2012 season as interim trainer.

For the 2012/13 season Kristl was Franco Foda's assistant coach at the 2nd division club 1. FC Kaiserslautern. Kristl reached 3rd place in the 2nd Bundesliga that season, but failed in the relegation games against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim to get promoted to the 1st Bundesliga. On August 29, 2013 Kristl and Foda were released. Since October 2014 Thomas Kristl is again assistant coach of the Austrian Bundesliga club SK Sturm Graz .

With the appointment of Franco Foda as head of the Austrian national soccer team on January 1, 2018, his two assistant coaches Thomas Kristl and Imre Szabics also switched to the ÖFB and have been assisting Foda in his work ever since. In November 2017, the team completed an interim training course and an international match against Uruguay .
