Michael Rensing (born May 14, 1984 in Lingen (Ems) ) is a German soccer goalkeeper . He moved to Bayern Munich as a youngster , stayed there for almost ten years and was also the goalkeeper of the professional team for a short time. After stints at 1. FC Köln and Bayer 04 Leverkusen , he moved to second division Fortuna Düsseldorf in 2013 and was promoted to the Bundesliga with the club in summer 2018 . Rensing was also in goal for various German junior national teams in a total of 33 international matches.
Club career
youth
Michael Rensing, the son of a German father and a Serbian mother , played in the youth team of the Lower Saxony club TuS Lingen . In 2000 he moved to the youth department of FC Bayern Munich , with whom he won the B-Junior championship in 2001 and the A-Junior championship in 2002. From the 2002/03 season he belonged to the Regionalliga team, for which he played his first (of 111) games on May 5, 2002 in a goalless draw at home against the Stuttgarter Kickers .
FC Bayern Munich

From the 2003/04 season Rensing was part of the professional squad of FC Bayern. On February 21, 2004 in a 1-0 home win over Hamburger SV , he played his first Bundesliga game . He completed another one that season and also won the championship in the Regionalliga Süd. In the following season he was used in the first team four times in league games and twice in the DFB-Pokal competition. In the following season he took part in six professional team games. For the first time he was used in the league cup. After the regular goalkeeper Oliver Kahn was injured, Rensing guarded the goal in the Champions League game against AC Milan on February 21, 2006 (1-1). In 2006/07 he was in goal once and in 2007/08 ten times.
After Kahn had ended his career, Rensing was the goalkeeper of FC Bayern Munich in the 2008/09 season . He suffered his first defeat as a Bundesliga goalkeeper on September 20, 2008 in a 2: 5 home game against Werder Bremen . With a record of 27 appearances without defeat since his debut on February 21, 2004, Rensing had surpassed Dirk Wolf's record as the best Bundesliga debutant. After the 1: 5 defeat at VfL Wolfsburg on April 4, 2009 , he was no longer the first choice under coach Jürgen Klinsmann until the end of the season - the previous substitute goalkeeper Hans Jörg Butt was preferred until further notice .
At the beginning of the 2009/10 season Rensing was initially used again as a goalkeeper by the new Bayern coach Louis van Gaal . After some uncertainties in the first encounters, however, Rensing had to let Butt go back to the fourth day of play. On May 25, 2010 it was announced that Rensings contract would not be renewed. He then left FC Bayern and was without a club from June. He kept himself fit at his own expense with his former Munich youth goalkeeping coach Daniel Weber at the district top division club VfR Garching . At the beginning of November 2010 he completed a trial training session with the English second division club Leicester City . However, he turned down a subsequent contract offer.
New beginning in the Rhineland
On December 21, 2010 Rensing signed a contract with 1. FC Köln . The Bundesliga team signed him until the end of the season as the successor to Faryd Mondragón with an option for extension. Almost a year after his last Bundesliga game, in a 3-2 win on January 23, 2010 in the away game at Werder Bremen , Rensing returned to the Bundesliga. On January 16, 2011, he and the billy goats reached a 1-1 draw at 1. FC Kaiserslautern at the start of the second half of the season , and later even won a victory against his former club. Due to its strong performance, 1. FC Köln extended its contract, which expired at the end of the season, by two years until 2013 in March 2011.
After the relegation of 1. FC Cologne in May 2012, a change was initiated among the financially weak Cologne, which among other things, Michael Rensing was suggested to look for a new club. In August he therefore moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen as a substitute for goalkeeper Bernd Leno on a free transfer . He signed a contract until June 30, 2013. He made his debut for the “Werkself” on November 4, 2012 (matchday 10) in a 3-2 home win against Fortuna Düsseldorf .
For the 2013/14 season Rensing moved to the second division Fortuna Düsseldorf, where he signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2015. After the coach of Fortuna, Mike Büskens , informed him shortly before the first league game against Energie Cottbus that he would only be goalkeeper number two behind Fabian Giefer this season , he is said to have left the Esprit Arena and gone home , which is why he was immediately deleted from the squad by Büskens and replaced by Robin Heller. The next day, the sports director Wolf Werner made it clear that Rensing was not suspended, but that he could leave Fortuna. On July 24th, Rensing took part in the training again after apologizing. He made his debut for Fortuna Düsseldorf on November 24, 2013 in the away game against FC Erzgebirge Aue . In the 3-0 defeat, he came on in the 37th minute for Aristide Bancé to replace goalkeeper Giefer, who had previously seen the red card . After Giefer's move to Schalke for the coming season became known, Rensing was in the starting line-up for three games from the 31st matchday, Giefer only received his farewell game on the last matchday. For the season 2014/15 was Lars Unnerstall commits. However, Rensing was given preference. Lars Unnerstall was in goal 10 times instead of Rensing, but he did not play any more games in the coming years until he finally left the club in the summer of 2017. As a new competitor of Rensing, Raphael Wolf was signed in the 2017/18 season . After Rensing suffered a rib injury after three games of the season, Raphael Wolf played in the other games, even after Rensing was healthy again. At the end of the season, Düsseldorf rose to the Bundesliga as champions. There, coach Funkel decided shortly before the first match day not to bet on the promotion goalkeeper Wolf, but instead for Rensing in goal. He only missed four games due to illness and was otherwise in goal for the full playing time. Fortuna finished the season on rank 10. Due to a shoulder injury, Rensing was replaced by loan player Zack Steffen from summer 2019 and was eventually ousted by him after his recovery. After Steffen's injury, however, the young Florian Kastenmeier was given preference under both Funkel and his successor Uwe Rösler . Rensing's contract ran until the end of the 2019/20 season. From July 1, 2020 he will be without a club.
National team
Rensing wore the national jersey for the first time on August 15, 2001 in Eisenhüttenstadt , when the U-18s lost 2-1 to Poland. Seven more missions followed before he won 10-0 with the U19s against the San Marino team on October 3, 2002 in Bad Hersfeld . On February 18, 2004 he made his debut in the U20 in Düsseldorf in a 2-1 win against Italy, he was substituted on in the second half. As a substitute goalkeeper behind Tim Wiese , he took part in the U-21 European Football Championship in 2004 , but was not used. Promoted to first choice after the tournament, he made his U21 debut on August 17, 2004 in Celle in a 2-0 victory over Lithuania . He played his last game on October 10, 2006 in Leverkusen in the 2-0 defeat by England .
