Diego Fernando Klimowicz [ klimɔviʧ ] (born July 6, 1974 in Buenos Aires ) is a former Argentine soccer player with a Spanish passport , who was most recently under contract with Instituto Atlético Central Córdoba . His father is from Italy ; other ancestors are of Polish descent.
Career
Beginnings in Argentina and first transfer to Europe
First football club the striker was Instituto Atlético Central Córdoba . He entered there at the age of ten and played in the youth team from 1984 to 1993. He joined Real Valladolid through Rayo Vallecano in January 1998 . In 1999 he switched to Club Atlético Lanús .
Bundesliga
In December 2001 he moved to the Bundesliga for VfL Wolfsburg for 6 million German marks . At the Lower Saxony, he was not only a crowd favorite right away, but also the club's record scorer with 57 goals in 149 Bundesliga games. This mark was only exceeded on the 2nd match day of the 2010/11 season by Edin Džeko with his 1-0 goal against 1. FSV Mainz 05 . For the 2007/08 season he moved to Borussia Dortmund , where he signed a two-year contract. With Borussia Dortmund, Klimowicz made it to the DFB Cup final in Berlin on April 19, 2008 , in which the team lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich . In the 2007/2008 season, Klimowicz was the best joker in the Bundesliga with five “joker goals”. On January 4, 2009, Klimowicz moved to VfL Bochum , where he signed a contract until June 30, 2010. He played his last game on April 16, 2010 against 1. FC Köln, before ending his career at the end of the 2009/10 season due to hip problems . After his career ended, he returned to Argentina. He ruled out a comeback with the Boca Juniors despite his hips healed.
On December 24, 2010, he announced his resignation and signed for a year with his youth club Instituto Atlético Central Córdoba , where he played from February 2011. Five months later, Klimowicz ended his active career for good.
Others
Diego Klimowicz first studied business administration in his home country , but then decided against graduating and thus for football. He is married and has three children. His son Mateo Klimowicz is also a footballer and was signed by VfB Stuttgart for the 2019/20 season. Javier Klimowicz is Diego Klimowicz's three years older brother, who was also a professional footballer and, among other things, played as a goalkeeper at CS Emelec in Ecuador.
