The VfL Viktoria Mennighüffen (officially: Association for physical exercises Viktoria Mennighüffen eV ) is a sports club from the laborers district Mennighüffen . The first soccer team played for two years in the highest amateur league in Westphalia.

history

The association was founded on May 14, 1931 in the Tümpelkrug restaurant . Even at the founding meeting there was a dispute as to whether the club should be called VfL Mennighüffen or VfL Viktoria Mennighüffen . The name Lawn Sports Club Mennighüffen , proposed as a compromise by teacher Redecker , did not receive a majority. After the decisive vote came to a stalemate, the vote of the chairman of the meeting, Gustav Reinking, decided in favor of the current club name VfL Viktoria Mennighüffen. In addition to the main sport of football, the club also offers karate , table tennis and gymnastics . The handball department split off from the main club on June 12, 2017 under the name VfL Handball Mennighüffen .

Soccer

In 1951, the VfL footballers were promoted to the district class. Two years later, after a playoff victory over SV Oetinghausen, they were promoted to the state league , which was then the highest Westphalian amateur league. In the promotion season 1953/54 , the relegation was only just barely. A year later , the team managed a big surprise with a 3-0 win at Arminia Bielefeld . Nevertheless, this victory could not prevent relegation to the district class. Since the association league was introduced above the state league in 1956 , there was an increased rise from the district classes that year, so that VfL reached the runner-up behind FC Lübbecke to return to the state league.

Back in the fourth-class state league, the Mennighüffener immediately reached fourth place, but also suffered a 9-1 home defeat against champions Borussia Lippstadt . In the following seasons, VfL slipped back into midfield and fought with SV Löhne-Obernbeck for local supremacy. In the early 1960s, Mennighüffen fought against relegation. In 1961, the team secured relegation only in the playoff. In front of 2,000 spectators in the Brackwede stadium , TSV Detmold was defeated 4-1. In the late 1960s, however, the team was able to stabilize. Nevertheless, the team rose in 1970 in the district league.

The direct resurgence was missed as runner-up behind TuRa Löhne , before the resurgence in the national league in 1973. Two years later, the club made headlines when Heinz-Günter Sibilski signed on as coach. In November 1975, however, Sibilski died of the consequences of a car accident near Hiddenhausen . At around the same time, the club was negotiating a merger with neighbor SV Löhne-Obernbeck , which was rejected by the VfL members. Merger talks with TuRa Löhne had already failed . In 1977 VfL, SV Löhne-Obernbeck and VfL Schlangen finished the season tied. In a decision-making round, two relegated teams were determined from this trio. All games ended in a draw and Löhne-Obernbeck saved himself with the best goal difference .

After two runner-up championships behind SuS Vlotho-Winterberg and SV Oetinghausen , VfL again made it to the national league in 1988. The team stayed there for four years, before going back down to the district league in 1992 and relegating to the district league A in 2000. After the immediate resurgence, VfL developed into a top team in the league and came fourth four times in a row and third once. However, the Mennighüffener always showed a big deficit on the respective champions. Then the team slipped into midfield and rose again in 2010 to the district league A. In 2019 VfL was runner-up there behind FA Herringhausen / Eickum and one year later made it into the district league.
