The 1947/48 season was the third season of the first-class football Landesliga Westfalen . Group winners were SuS Recklinghausen and Preußen Münster . In the final of the Westphalia Championship, the Münster team prevailed 2-1 in the third play-off game and rose to the Oberliga West .

The only relegated was TuS Lengerich . From the district classes rose to group 1 of the TB Eickel , the SSV Hagen , SuS Niederschelden , Teutonia Riemke , the SG Wattenscheid 09 and the VfB 07 Weidenau . Sportfreunde Gladbeck , SpVgg Herten , Sparta Nordhorn , Arminia Ochtrup and VfL Resse 08 were promoted to Group 2 . In addition, there was VfL Witten from the upper league .

Playoffs for first place

The teams from Recklinghausen and Herne with equal points had to determine the champions of Group 2 in a play-off. Recklinghausen won the game on April 25, 1948 in neutral Gelsenkirchen 5-0.

Westphalia Championship

The two group winners should determine the Westphalia champion and promoted to Oberliga West in the return game. The game was played on May 2 and 16, 1948. However, the decision was only to be made in the third deciding game in favor of Münster. The first play-off took place on May 23, 1948 in Dortmund , the second on June 16, 1948 in Gelsenkirchen and the third on June 19, 1948 in Gladbeck .

Promotion round to the national league

Group 1

The decisive game between Riemke and Weidenau was canceled when the score was 2: 1 due to crowd riots. Weidenau did not appear in a rescheduled game. After Weidenau protested against a game score, a replay was scheduled to be closed to the public, with Weidenau winning 2-1. Weidenau then rose, while Riemke subsequently rose as well.
