history

The VfB Weidenau was formed in 1907 from members of the football department of the gymnastics club "Auf den Hütten" and the Weidenauer Spielvereinigung 05. The original venue for the games was the Bismarckplatz in Weidenau.

The highlight in the club history is certainly the promotion to the Landesliga Westfalen in 1948 , which was the second highest division at the time. In the promotion round, Alemannia Dortmund were defeated 3-0 and Herringer SV 2-0 on neutral places . The table constellation then ensured that the final game in Grevenbrück between Teutonia Riemke and VfB had to bring the decision to the promotion. However, it should not be a normal course of the game. Around 1,800 fans had come from Riemke and had drunk a lot of alcohol (the friends from the Ruhr area got special rations at the time). In addition, the referee from neighboring Herne was also an inmate of the Riemker special train and had obviously also given the alcohol a lot. An unjustified penalty whistle 8 minutes before the end of the game led to a 2-1 lead for Riemke. After that, there were riots and fights and the game was abandoned. In the following sports court hearing, it was decided to repeat the game in camera. This game took place on August 29, 1948 in Boelerheide ( Hagen ), only nine eyewitnesses were allowed on each side. VfB won this ghost game 2-1 against the Riemker trained by Ernst Kuzorra and rose to the Westphalia League. The league membership lasted only one year. In 1950, he was promoted to the regional league, which was newly formed under the Westphalia League, and in 1953 was again relegated to sport. In 1955 he was able to move into the highest German amateur class.

In the following years, the club shuttled between the district and state leagues. The latter belonged to the club from 1967 to 1980. A sporting highlight in the club's history was participation in the main round of the DFB Cup in the 1976/77 season. There, on August 6, 1976, the then national division lost 6-0 in the first round against second division Bayer 05 Uerdingen, who had just been relegated from the Bundesliga .
