The VfJ 08 Paderborn (officially: Association for Youth Care 08 Paderborn eV ) was a sports club from Paderborn . The first soccer team played in the highest Westphalian amateur league for five years. The VfJ is a predecessor of today's SC Paderborn 07 .

history

The club was founded in December 1908 by four merchants as FC Preußen Paderborn . Two years later, this was allowed to join the West German game association after a 5-3 win against VfB 03 Bielefeld . VfB Paderborn was founded in 1911 and merged with FC Prussia a year later. This union existed only for a short time. After the First World War , VfB Paderborn was re-established and then merged with TV Jahn Paderborn for a short time . Finally, in 1920, VfB became VfJ 08.

From the foundation to the Second World War (1908 to 1945)

In 1920 the VfJ made it into the top division for the first time with promotion to the Westphalia regional league. A league reform that turned the two-track district league into a single-track league resulted in the prompt relegation to the second division. It was not until 1926 that they were promoted to the top division, which was now called 1st district class Westphalia . During the season, the team suffered a 12-0 home defeat against Arminia Bielefeld and ended the season as the penultimate of the eastern group. As such, the Paderborn team had to play two relegation games against the penultimate of the West Group Westfalia Scherlebeck from Herten . After a 2-2 win in Paderborn, Westfalia prevailed 3-2 in the second leg.

Only after the third promotion to the top division, which was now called the Regional League Westphalia , the VfJ was able to establish itself. About seventh place in the promotion season and sixth place in the year after, the team experienced the sporting climax with fifth place in the eastern group in the 1932/33 season. However, from the group only the master Arminia Bielefeld was accepted into the newly created Gauliga Westphalia , while the VfJ continued to play in the second-class district class East Westphalia . The team promptly dismounted and did not return until 1936.

During the Second World War , the VfJ entered a war syndicate with local rivals SV Paderborn . From then on, they joined the Sportfreunde Rot-Weiß Paderborn and were accepted into the Gauliga Westfalen in 1944 without any athletic qualifications. There the so-called " tank team " defeated Union Herford 3-0 and SV 07 Neuhaus even 5-0. After these games, game operations were canceled.

Post-war period (1945 to 1968)

After the war ended, VfJ and SV went their separate ways again. In 1948, the VfJ made it into the then second-class Landesliga Westfalen , which is the highest amateur league. With this rise began a time in which the VfJ advanced to an elevator team . After only one year it went back to the district class, where the team became champions with 57: 3 points and was promoted to the new 2nd regional league Westphalia. Two years later, the VfJ was the season winner, the VfL Schildesche was defeated, among other things, 9: 1, but failed in the subsequent final at the RSV Lüdenscheid-Höh . Nevertheless, the team returned to the Westphalian upper house.

The 1953/54 season ended the Paderborn tied with SpVg Beckum , so that a playoff for the relay championship was necessary. In the neutral Brackwede the VfJ prevailed with 2: 1 and reached the Westphalia Championship. There the team beat VfB Habinghorst 6: 2 and TuRa Bergkamen 3: 0, but lost against TSV Marl-Hüls with 0: 2 and against Sportfreunde Siegen with 0: 4, so that VfJ was third. In the following years, the VfJ could no longer build on this success and slipped back into mediocrity. In 1956 , the team missed the newly created Association League Westphalia and was thus only fourth class.

In 1957 the Paderborn were relegated from the state league and only offered regional class football on the local Wilhelmshöhe sports field . The direct resurgence succeeded before it went back to the district class again in 1960. During the season the Paderborn team suffered a 1:10 defeat at TSV Detmold . Two years later, the VfJ returned to the national league and had to relegate again as bottom of the table. In the meantime, the club SC Grün-Weiß Paderborn had taken over the sporting leadership role in the city, while the VfJ played in the district class. The highlight at this time was a friendly against Bayern Munich on February 5, 1967 in front of over 10,000 spectators.

At the end of the season, the Paderborn runners-up behind Borussia Lippstadt . Since SV 13 Paderborn also did not come out of the district class in the 1960s, those responsible for both clubs started negotiations on a merger of the two clubs. Finally, in 1969, VfJ 08 and SV 13 Paderborn merged to form 1. FC Paderborn . Thanks to the championship of VfJ 08 in the district class in the 68/69 season, the newly founded 1. FC Paderborn was able to start playing in the regional league. On July 1, 1985, 1. FC Paderborn became part of TuS Paderborn-Neuhaus , which has been called SC Paderborn 07 since 1997.
