Vorwärts Wettringen (officially: Fußballclub Vorwärts Wettringen eV ) is a sports club from Wettringen in the Steinfurt district . The first women's handball team took part in the DHB Cup twice.

history

The association was founded in 1976. In addition to handball, the club also offers football , karate , tennis , table tennis , popular sports and running clubs .

Handball

The handball players from Wettringen were promoted to the then second-class Regionalliga West in 1984 and missed the play-off round for qualifying for the newly created 2nd Bundesliga by just one point in the promotion season . In 1989 the team was runner-up behind the loss-point-free TV Herrentrup . Later, the team was relegated from the regional league and since relegation in 2013 has been playing in the Westphalia Association.

The competition wrestlers qualified twice for the DHB Cup. Vorwärts was most successful when it first participated in the 1988/89 season, when the team first beat second division SC Greven 09 21:14 and then lost to Bundesliga club VfL Oldenburg 21:31 in the second round . The second participation followed in the 2006/07 season , when the competition wrestlers lost to TV Strombach in round one with 23:24. The greatest successes in the youth field were the German runner-up championships of the female B-youth in 1980 (final defeat against TV Büttelborn ) and the female A-youth in 1983 (final loss against VfL Hameln ).

Vorwärts Wettringen was part of the league for many years before being relegated to the association league in the 2012/2013 season. In the following season Vorwärts only saved itself on the last day of the game from falling into the state league and became runner-up in the association league in the 2014/2015 season. In the 2015/2016 season the team managed to return to the league.

The footballers from Vorwärts Wettringen commuted between the district and district league for decades. In 1995 he was promoted to the national league for the first time , where Vorwärts reached its sporting zenith in the 1998/99 season with fourth place. In 2003 the Wettringer were relegated and returned to the regional league in 2008. Two years later, the forward team had to go back to the district league as bottom of the table. Only in 2020 did Vorwärts return to the state league.

The over -32 team from Vorwärts Wettringen was the Westphalia champion in 2011. Four years later, the over-40 team also became Westphalian champions. The home ground of the Vorwärts Wettringen footballers is the Volksbank Stadium with a capacity of 3,302 spectators. It is played on natural grass. The stadium used to be called Sportzentrum Werninghoker Straße .
