Erik Christensen (born December 17, 1983 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played 404 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins , Atlanta Thrashers , Anaheim Ducks , New York Rangers , Minnesota Wild during his active career between 1999 and 2017 has contested in the National Hockey League on the position of the center . Christensen, who also played in various European top leagues, became Swedish champion with the HV71 in 2017 .
Career
The 1.85 m tall center began his career with the Kamloops Blazers in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League before he was selected in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft as 69th in the third round by the Pittsburgh Penguins .
The left shooter spent two more years with the Blazers and then moved to league rivals Brandon Wheat Kings . In the 2002/03 season he was the top scorer of the Western Hockey League with 108 points. Christensen spent the lockout in the 2004/05 season with the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , a farm team of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the American Hockey League . On October 31, 2005, the Canadian was appointed to the NHL roster of the franchise from Pittsburgh for the first time , his first goal in the highest North American professional league he scored three days later in the game against the New York Islanders .
On February 26, 2008, Erik Christensen was transferred to the Atlanta Thrashers along with Colby Armstrong , Angelo Esposito and a first-round draft pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft in a trade deadline swap for Marián Hossa and Pascal Dupuis . During the following season he was exchanged again and played in the wake of the exchange for the Anaheim Ducks . In December 2009, the Ducks put him on the waiver list, from which he was signed by the New York Rangers .
From June 2012 Christensen was under contract with HC Lev Prague from the Continental Hockey League , before he was released from this in October 2013 and a few days later was signed by HV71 from the Svenska Hockeyligan . There he ended his active career in the summer of 2017 after winning the Swedish championship at the age of 34.
