Rob Skrlac began his career as a hockey player with the Richmond Sockeyes, a team in a junior amateur league in British Columbia , for which he was active from 1993 to 1994. Then the winger went to the Kamloops Blazers in the Western Hockey League . There the offensive player stood out mainly because of his robust style of play and the many penalty minutes that he received in the subsequent period. During this time he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1995 in the ninth round at a total of 224th position by the Buffalo Sabers , for which he never ran. After he had exceeded the age limit for participation in the WHL after the end of the 1996/97 season, Skrlac became a free agent . On June 17, 1997, he signed a contract with the New Jersey Devils . The leap into the National Hockey League was denied him for the time being, he spent the 1997/98 season with the Albany River Rats , the Devils' farm team at the time, in the American Hockey League .
The attacker immediately succeeded in playing a large number of games, at the end of the season there were 53 games and 256 penalty minutes to book, but he was without a goal and scored two points. In the following three years he sat on the bench less often, but also received less match practice. During the 2001/02 season, the Canadian completed 29 games for the Mississippi Sea Wolves in the East Coast Hockey League . He scored four points and received 161 penalty minutes. In the same season Skrlac also played for the Portland Pirates and then returned to the River Rats. During the 2003/04 season he made the leap to the NHL. He completed a total of eight games for the New Jersey Devils and was able to record one goal. Then Skrlac returned again to the AHL and did not play any other games in the NHL. The Canadian ended his active career on September 27, 2005.
