Port McNeill is a small town in the western part of the Canadian province of British Columbia . The parish is the administrative seat of the Regional District of Mount Waddington on Vancouver Island .

The parish is named after William Henry McNeill, a captain of the Hudson's Bay Company . From around 1832 he went on a merchant ship on the west coast.

Port McNeill is on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island, at the junction of Queen Charlotte Strait and Johnstone Strait . The village is about 36 kilometers southeast of Port Hardy on Highway 19 .

history

The history of the settlement goes back further than just the general view of Europeans, since before Europeans settled the area was already a settlement and hunting area of ​​the First Nation . Mainly members of the 'Namgis First Nation (Nimpkish-Cheslakees), who belong to the Kwakwaka'wakw , settled here .

The settlement developed from a former logging camp. In the course of time, fur hunters and traders first settled here and later settlers too. Over time, so many people lived in the settlement that a post office was opened here on May 1, 1938.

The first award of local self-government for the municipality took place on February 18, 1966 ( incorporated as Village Municipality ). Another award was made on April 17, 1982 ( incorporated as Town Municipality )

Demographics

The census in 2011 showed a population of 2,505 inhabitants for the settlement. The population of the settlement decreased by 4.5% compared to the 2006 census, while the population in the province of British Columbia grew by 7.0% at the same time.

Port McNeill is on Highway 19. The Island Highway connects the village to the north with Port Hardy and to the south with the Campbell River .

The Port McNeill Ferry Terminal is also located in the harbor . From here, BC Ferries ferries run to Cormorant Island (via Alert Bay ) and Malcolm Island (via Sointula ).

On the outskirts of the community is the Port McNeill Airport ( IATA airport code : YMP, Transport Canada Identifier: CAT5). The airfield has only an asphalt runway of 884 meters in length and a gravel runway of 1,113 meters in length. The local sea airport is located in the port of the municipality (Transport Canada Identifier: CAM8).
