The Johnstone Strait ( English Johnstone Strait ) is a 110 km long strait on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island in the Canadian province of British Columbia . Opposite the Vancouver Island coast from north to south are: Hanson Island , West Cracroft Island , the mainland (coast of British Columbia), Hardwicke Island , West Thurlow Island and East Thurlow Island . At this point the Johnstone Strait meets the Discovery Passage , which continues to the Georgia Strait .

The strait has a width between 2.5 km and 5 km. It is a major shipping route on the west coast of North America, which connects the ports in Georgia Strait (particularly the port of Vancouver ) with Prince Rupert , Alaska and the North Pacific.

In the summer months the strait is home to around 150 killer whales (orcas), which are an attraction for kayakers and tourist boats. Scientists like Michael Bigg and Paul Spong have been observing the orcas here since 1970. Spong founded the OrcaLab , which aims to study the killer whales in their natural habitat without affecting them in any way. In the strait is the Robson Bight (Michael Bigg) Ecological Reserve .

The strait was named by George Vancouver after James Johnstone , a master on the Chatham armed tender . In 1792, Vancouver's expedition realized that Vancouver Island was an island.

There are no cities along Johnstone Strait. Telegraph Cove and Robson Bight on Vancouver Island are on the coast near the north end of the strait. The settlement of Sayward on Kelsey Bay is about halfway along the strait.
