Shedden was named head coach of Wichita Thunder in the Central Hockey League (CHL) during the 1992/93 season . During his three-year tenure, the team won the CHL championship twice, and in the 1993/94 season he was named coach of the year in the CHL.

After four years as head coach with the Louisiana IceGators in the East Coast Hockey League and one season with the Flint Generals in the United Hockey League including a title win, Shedden took over another CHL club, the Memphis RiverKings , and led them to the finals three times and in 2002 and 2003 to win the title.

Between 2003 and 2005 he headed the St. John's Maple Leafs as head coach, the former AHL farm team of the Toronto Maple Leafs .

In 2005 he decided to move to Europe, first becoming a coach at the Finnish first division club Helsingfors IFK in order to take over the relay and city competitor Jokerit for the 2006/07 season . In 2007, Jokerit reached the final of the Liiga under Shedden's leadership , and he was also given the task of looking after the Finnish national team as head coach at the 2008 World Cup. He led Finland to the bronze medal.

Between 2008 and 2014 Shedden was head coach at EV Zug in the Swiss National League A (NLA). He reached the semi-finals of the NLA playoff round five times in a row with the EVZ. In the 2013/14 season they missed the playoffs, Shedden was then dismissed in March 2014.

From 2009 Shedden had been appointed to the Canada team's coaching staff for the Spengler Cup several times : first he was an assistant, in 2012 and 2013 he worked as head coach and led the Canadians to victory in the traditional tournament in 2012. At the 2013 World Cup, he was assistant coach for the Canadian national team.

In October 2014, Shedden was hired by KHL Medveščak Zagreb from the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) as head coach. He looked after the team until the end of the season.

At the end of October 2015 he took over the post of head coach at the Swiss NLA representative HC Lugano . He led Lugano to the final of the Spengler Cup in December 2015 , but there his team lost to the Canadian selection. The final series for the Swiss championship in spring 2016 was also lost. In December 2016, Shedden succeeded again in leading the HC into the final of the Spengler Cup, once again losing to Canada. On January 16, 2017, he was released in Lugano, at the time of the separation the team was eighth in the NLA.

Shortly before Christmas 2017, Shedden was hired as head coach of the ERC Ingolstadt  ( German Ice Hockey League ).
