Wayne Simpson (born November 19, 1989 in Fort Gordon , Georgia ) is an American ice hockey player who has been playing for ERC Ingolstadt from the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) since summer 2019 .

Career

Simpson played with his brother John on the ice hockey teams in the schools they attended. He was active in his high school years for the Lawrence Academy and during his college days - he studied business administration  - for the Union College . The ice hockey team at this school is known as the Union Dutchmen . He was able to be the player with the highest points of his team in both teams in some seasons. With Union College he won the championship of ECAC Hockey in the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons , whereby he was the top scorer of his team in 2012/13.

He then received an offer from the South Carolina Stingrays from the ECHL , for which he was active the following two seasons. In both the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons he was the second best scorer on his team. In the 2014/15 season he won the Eastern Conference final with the Stingrays and was only defeated by the Allen Americans in the Kelly Cup final after seven games in the series. Simpson set a new ECHL point record in the playoffs with 38 points .

He was able to recommend himself for the more powerful American Hockey League (AHL) and signed a contract with the Portland Pirates for the 2015/16 season . In total, he was active in the AHL for the following four seasons and was able to achieve more than 40 scorer points for his teams in the main round , except for the first year . In the 2016/17 season he reached the Eastern Conference final with the Providence Bruins . For the 2017/18 season he received a so-called two-way contract from the Washington Capitals , which also stipulated an annual salary for possible NHL missions. Simpsons ran this year exclusively for the AHL representative of the Capitals, the Hershey Bears . At the following AHL station, the Rochester Americans , in the 2018/19 season , in addition to his defense work, which he carried out as a right winger, his clever style of play was praised, as he did not have a long break in his career due to injuries despite his high commitment would have.

For the 2019/20 season he accepted an offer from ERC Ingolstadt and moved to the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) in Europe for the first time in his career . In his first DEL season , Wayne Simpson advanced to become one of the league's top players on points, so his contract was extended during the season. At the end of the main round he was DEL top scorer with 56 points.
