Francisco Albo

Francisco Albo was a 16th century Greek sailor . He took part in Ferdinand Magellan's circumnavigation and ended the voyage as the helmsman of the Victoria . He wrote a logbook that documents the route of the first circumnavigation .

biography

His birth and death dates are unknown. He was a resident of Chios , an island in the Aegean Sea .

He became known as a participant in Ferdinand Magellan's expedition . He set sail from Seville as the boatswain of the flagship (command: Magellan), a Nao , the Trinidad , and finished the voyage of the first circumnavigation as navigator (helmsman) of the Nao Victoria under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano .

Francisco Albo's logbook

During the circumnavigation of the earth, Francisco Albo wrote a log with the title Derrotero del viaje de Magallanes desde el cabo de San Agustín en el Brasil, hasta el regreso a España de la nao Victoria . In this logbook (sea book) on pages 9 to 13 (of a total of 84 pages) the passage through the Strait of Magellan is described with precise details of the latitude for each individual day, which equates to the discovery of Chile.

This important document is kept in the Archivo General de Indias of Seville.
