Darin Olver (born March 5, 1985 in Burnaby , British Columbia ) is a German - Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with ERC Ingolstadt from the German Ice Hockey League since June 2017 . His brother Mark is also a hockey player.
Career
College hockey and NHL draft
As a hockey coach from his father John, Darin lived in various states of the United States during his childhood . Nevertheless, he played as a junior with the Chilliwack Chiefs, a club from his native region, in the British Columbia Hockey League . In the 2002/03 season he reached the finals with the Chiefs and were their players with the highest points. He then moved to the US college league NCAA at Northern Michigan University , where he was active for their ice hockey team, the Wildcats, for four seasons. Olver was the player with the highest points in three seasons, the best preparer in his last college season in 2006/07 and the best scorer of the college team behind Mike Santorelli . The following 3 seasons his brother Mark was the best point player in the Northern Michigan Wildcats. Due to his successful college season, the left-shooter was invited to the NHL Entry Draft in 2004 and selected as 36th in the second round by the New York Rangers , who first played him with their farm team Hartford Wolf Pack in the American Hockey League at the end of the 2006/07 season used. Olver was rated as an intelligent player with playmaker quality who lacks some physical assertiveness.
Change to Germany - successes with Augsburg and Berlin
Because of the many games and the tougher style of play in the North American professional leagues , Olver moved to Germany after only 6 appearances in the AHL , where he played for the Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven from the 2nd Bundesliga ice hockey in the 2007/08 season. With the North Germans he was able to secure relegation and was the player with the highest points on his team throughout the season. After good performances in Bremerhaven, the Canadian was finally committed to the 2008/09 season by the Straubing Tigers from the German Ice Hockey League . In his first DEL season he was unable to set accents due to an injury, but attracted the attention of Larry Mitchell, the coach of league competitor Augsburger Panther , who signed him for the 2009/10 season . Mitchell put Olver in the center forward position at the side of Brett Engelhardt and Colin Murphy , which should form one of the most successful attack lines in the league. It was also the Panther's most successful DEL season to date, in which they defeated the Adler Mannheim as well as the reigning champions and main round winner Eisbären Berlin in the play-offs and reached the final. After the main round, Olver himself was voted “Newcomer of the Year” by the specialist magazine Ice Hockey News . In the following and second season with the Panthers, Olver again formed a very successful attack line with Barry Tallackson and Noah Clarke , was the most successful scorer and preparer of the league with 70 points and 47 assists and was unanimously appointed by an annually appointed expert committee of ice hockey News voted best DEL center forward and player of the year. In this season, in November 2010, he also appeared in the jersey of the German national team for the first time as part of the Germany Cup .
For the 2011/12 season he moved together with his strike partner Tallackson to the reigning champion Eisbären Berlin. Here he was the team's best scorer in his first season for the capital city club, was able to defend the championship, in which he scored the important 2-1 lead in a 3-1 final victory in the decisive game against Adler Mannheim. In the following season he was able to win the championship again with the Berliners - in total he was active for 6 seasons for the polar bears, whereby in the season 2015/16 in which he played together with his brother Mark for Berlin, he was again the best point player in his team .
For the 2017/18 season , when Tallackson also had to leave the club, he terminated his current contract in Berlin and switched to ERC Ingolstadt in exchange with Thomas Oppenheimer , where his former sponsor Larry Mitchell was now active in management. Already in his first season for the team from Audi -Stadt he was the top scoring player of the team, so his contract was extended to the end of season for another 2 years.
Olver played his 500th DEL game wearing the Ingolstadt team on November 17, 2017 against his former club Eisbären Berlin. Berlin won the anniversary game 6-1.
