Mark Olver (born January 1, 1988 in Burnaby , British Columbia ) is a German - Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with Eisbären Berlin from the German Ice Hockey League since July 2017 . His older brother Darin Olver is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Career as a junior player
Mark Olver completed two seasons with the Omaha Lancers in the United States Hockey League . In his second season with the Lancers, the Canadian led the team in goals, assist and points scoring , after which he was named Omaha's Striker of the Year and Omaha's Most Valuable Player . After graduating from Millard North High School , the player attended Northern Michigan University and played for their team, Northern Michigan Wildcats, in the university and college sports league Central Collegiate Hockey Association . In his first season in the CCHA, Olver was the most successful rookie in the league with 21 goals scored and the best scorer of the Wildcats with 38 points, after which he was nominated to the CCHA All-Rookie Team at the end of this season.
In the 2008 NHL Entry Draft , Olver was selected in the fifth round at a total of 140th position by the Colorado Avalanche . The striker was also available in the Entry Drafts 2006 and 2007 , but was not selected by any team due to his relatively small height. The center completed two more seasons with the Wildcats and was the Wildcats' most successful points collector in both seasons. In his final CCHA season, he was also named to the CCHA First All-Star Team and the NCAA West First All-American Team, and was one of the finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award .
Career as a professional player
On March 30, 2010, Mark Olver signed a two-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche. The player then completed six more games for Colorado's farm team , the Lake Erie Monsters , in the American Hockey League and scored two goals. The following season, the striker played 18 games for Colorado in the National Hockey League , scoring nine points, but spent most of the season with the Monsters in the AHL. In the pre -season preparation for the 2011/12 NHL season , Mark Olver suffered a head injury that prevented him from playing for several months. The center played its first games of the season for the Lake Erie Monsters in January 2012. On February 16, he was appointed to the Avalanche NHL squad, where he was able to earn a regular place for the rest of the season. He could not defend this in the following season and completed about half of the games in the AHL and NHL. At the beginning of the 2013/14 season he was again not in the NHL squad and then came back to the Monsters in the AHL.
In May 2014 he decided to move to Europe and was signed by the newly founded HK Sochi from the Continental Hockey League . Due to an injury, he only played one KHL game for the club. In July 2015 Olver left the HC Sochi and signed a one-year contract with the Kloten Flyers of the National League A . After only eight games for the Swiss , he moved to the German ice hockey league for the Eisbären Berlin , where he played in a team with his brother Darin for the first time. After a year in the German capital, the striker finally returned to North America and joined the Tucson Roadrunners from the AHL. Olver spent a season there and on loan from league rivals Bakersfield Condors before returning to the DEL in the summer of 2017 to the Eisbären, who signed him as a replacement for Kyle Wilson .
