Sean Backman (born April 29, 1986 in Cos Cob , Connecticut ) is an American ice hockey player who has been playing for the Eisbären Berlin in the German Ice Hockey League since August 2017 . Previously, Backman was active in the North American College League and the American Hockey League . His father Mike was also a professional ice hockey player, as were his two brothers-in-law Matt Moulson and Jonathan Quick .

Career

Junior and college league

After Sean Backman was active in his high school days for the Old Farms School in Avon , a city in his home state Connecticut , he moved to the United States Hockey League with the Green Bay Gamblers at the age of 19 . With the Gamblers, he was both the best points player and top scorer of his club in his first season and thus recommended himself for the ice hockey team at the renowned Yale University . Since all Yale sports teams are referred to as Bulldogs, Backman ran the next four years in the ECAC Hockey of the North American University and College League NCAA for the Yale Bulldogs . He was the team's top scorer in three seasons, and twice the best-scoring player. In his first season he was elected the best newcomer to the ECAC, was able to win the main round with his club in his last two seasons and in the 2008/09 season also the championship of the division, where he won the 5-0 final against Cornell University scored three hits. After his final season for Yale in the 2009/10 game year, he was named the best ice hockey player in the Ivy League universities .

Seven years of AHL

For the 2010/11 season he signed his first professional contract as a hockey player with the Dallas Stars from the National Hockey League , for whose farm teams in particular from the AHL the Texas Stars , but also the Idaho Steelheads from the ECHL, he was active. The following two seasons Backman ran for the AHL team of the New York Islanders , the Bridgeport Sound Tigers from his home state Connecticut, on the ice. For the 2013/14 season he stayed in New England and joined the then AHL team Manchester Monarchs . While he was more on the defensive in Bridgeport , among other things in the outnumbered game as a so-called penalty killer, he took on a more offensive role at the Monarchs - as in his college days - and was able to score 61 points (24 goals) at the AHL in his second season Championship of his team 2015. As part of the structural changes within the AHL for the 2015/16 season , in which AHL teams were also established in the state of California , Backman stayed with the AHL representative of the Los Angeles Kings , but from this season they were the Ontario Reign . In his first season on the West Coast he was Ontario's highest point player in the main round and also played the following season for the California team.

Change to Germany in the DEL

In the 2017/18 season , the winger, who is known as a very fast skater, moved abroad for the first time in his career and joined the Eisbären Berlin from the DEL . In his first season for the polar bears he was the team's best scorer in the main round with 45 points and one of the top scorers in the DEL with 24 goals. His contract was then extended by two years to 2020 with the Berliners during the season.
