Paul Laus (born September 26, 1970 in Beamsville , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played for the Florida Panthers in the National Hockey League on the position of defender during his playing career between 1987 and 2002 . Laus embodied the player type of the Enforcer .
Career
Laus played during his junior years with the St. Catharines Falcons before moving to the Hamilton Steelhawks in the Ontario Hockey League in 1987 . After only one year there he joined the league rivals Niagara Falls Thunder for the next two years , where he remained until 1990. Already during the NHL Entry Draft in 1989 , the defender was selected in the second round in 37th place by the Pittsburgh Penguins .
After moving to the professional field in the summer of 1990, Laus first played in the Minor Leagues International Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League . He ran up to the end of the 1992/93 season for the Albany Choppers , Muskegon Lumberjacks and Cleveland Lumberjacks in the IHL and the Knoxville Cherokees in the ECHL. Only by the selection in the NHL expansion draft in 1993 - the Pittsburgh Penguins did not protect him - through the new in the National Hockey League acquired Florida Panthers who succeeded Enforcer the jump to the NHL.
At the beginning of the 1993/94 season Laus was part of the team from the state of Florida . He finally worked out a regular place at the beginning of the following season. This was followed in the 1995/96 season by jumping into the final series of the Stanley Cup , which the Panthers clearly lost to the Colorado Avalanche , before setting personal bests in the categories of assists , scorer points and penalty minutes in the 1996/97 season . Until 2000, the Canadian was an integral part of the squad. A groin injury finally made him sideline for a long time from November 2000 and when he was fit again, he injured his wrist in January 2002. This injury forced him to play his last NHL games in the 2001/02 season . Due to the protracted injury, he missed the entire season 2002/03 , whereupon he announced the end of his active career on September 20, 2003.
