Matthew "Matt" Donovan (born May 9, 1990 in Edmond , Oklahoma ) is an American ice hockey player who has been playing for the Milwaukee Admirals from the American Hockey League on the position of defender since June 2018 .
Career
Donovan spent part of his youth in the Dallas Stars ' youth program before moving to the United States Hockey League at the age of 17, where he played for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders for two years. In his first season he was elected to the league's all-rookie team and selected in the following summer by the New York Islanders from the National Hockey League in the NHL Entry Draft 2008 in the fourth round in 96th position. The second USHL year he finished as the best point defender in the entire league, which brought him the election to the First All-Star Team of the league. In the summer of 2009, Donovan enrolled at the University of Denver . In addition to his studies, he played parallel for the university team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . Within the two years that the offensive defender spent at the university, he was again appointed to numerous selection teams. In a total of 78 games at college level, he collected 53 points scorer .
In March 2011, Donovan finally signed his first professional contract with the Islanders, ending his studies early. The defender spent the rest of the 2010/11 season with New York's Bridgeport Sound Tigers farm team in the American Hockey League , where he quickly gained a foothold in the professional field with five scorer points in six missions. Nevertheless, he spent the entire 2011/12 season in Bridgeport and only made his NHL debut at the end of the season for the Islanders, who had ordered him there in April 2012. In the end he found himself in the AHL All-Rookie Team because of his performance . The American also spent the 2012/13 game year with the Sound Tigers without receiving any minutes in the NHL this time. It was not until the 2013/14 season that Donovan was able to earn a regular place in the New York Islanders squad and played 52 games. It was also used 27 times in Bridgeport. The upward trend did not continue despite his contract extension in the summer of 2014, as the defensive player only appeared twelve times during the 2014/15 season and otherwise acted as the seventh defender in the squad as a reservist.
Since the Islanders did not renew his expiring contract this time, Donovan moved as a free agent in July 2015 for one year to league rivals Buffalo Sabers . There he spent the game year but exclusively in the AHL with the Rochester Americans farm team . Donovan therefore decided not to continue his career in North America in the summer of 2016 and therefore moved to Europe. There he signed an annual contract with the reigning Swedish champions Frölunda HC from Gothenburg . During the season he defended the title with the team in the Champions Hockey League , which Frölunda secured by beating HC Sparta Prague . In mid-February 2017, his expiring contract was prematurely extended by one year until summer 2018. In total, Donovan scored eight goals and 34 assists in 102 games. He returned to North America in June 2018 and signed a one-year contract with the Milwaukee Admirals . Almost six months later, their NHL cooperation partner, Nashville Predators, took over the contract from the American and extended the commitment to the NHL until summer 2020. In March 2020, he finally signed a two-year contract with the Admirals, limited to the AHL.
International
At the international level, Donovan represented his home country at the World Junior A Challenge 2008 and the U20 World Junior Championship in 2010 . He won the gold medal with the Americans at both the World Junior A Challenge and the U20 World Junior Championship. The United States secured the world title with a 6: 5 final victory over Canada. He contributed five scorer points in seven tournament games and his three tournament hits were the most among all defenders.
For the men's selection of the US boys , Donovan was on the ice at the 2014 World Cup . There he met twice in seven tournament games. The Americans finished the world title bouts in sixth place.
