Stephen Werner (born August 8, 1984 in Washington, DC ) is an American ice hockey player who was last under contract with the EC Graz 99ers in the Austrian ice hockey league between 2014 and 2017 .
Career
Stephen Werner began his career as a hockey player in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program , for which he was active from 2000 to 2002 in the junior leagues United States Hockey League and North American Hockey League . He then attended UMass Amherst for four years , for whose ice hockey team he also played in Hockey East . During his studies he was selected in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft in the third round as a total of 83rd player by the Washington Capitals . For their farm team Hershey Bears from the American Hockey League , the center made its professional ice hockey debut towards the end of the 2005/06 season . In the following two seasons he ran parallel for the Hershey Bears in the AHL and their cooperation partner South Carolina Stingrays in the ECHL . In addition, he came in the course of the 2007/08 season , he was also used for the AHL team Springfield Falcons . In the following season he went to the Milwaukee Admirals in the AHL and the Cincinnati Cyclones in the ECHL.
After a one year break from ice hockey, Werner went to Germany for the 2010/11 season , where he received a contract with Starbulls Rosenheim from the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga . The US-American spent the following season with the Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg from the German Ice Hockey League , before he was signed by their league rivals Augsburger Panther for the 2012/13 season . Between 2014 and 2017 he played for the EC Graz 99ers in the Austrian ice hockey league .
International
For the USA , Werner took part in the U18 World Junior Championship in 2002 and the U20 World Junior Championship in 2004 . In both tournaments he won the gold medal with his team. In the 2011/12 season, he completed three international matches for the US men's selection .
