Career
Petersen was drafted in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft in 244th place in the ninth round by the Pittsburgh Penguins . After four years at Colorado College , from 1996 to 2000, he played in the 2000/01 season for the first time in the National Hockey League . Most of the time, however, he spent with the farm team , the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins in the American Hockey League . In the 2001/02 season , the striker completed the season with the most NHL games so far, in which he made 79 missions and 18 points scorer . Despite this performance, he had to spend the following years again exclusively in the AHL.
In the summer of 2004, Petersen moved from Pittsburgh to the Edmonton Oilers , but was used with two exceptions in the playoffs of the 2005/06 season there only in the AHL with the Edmonton Road Runners and later with the Iowa Stars . Since the stars were actually the AHL farm team of the Dallas Stars , he was able to establish contacts with this franchise and was hired by the stars as a free agent in summer 2007 . After another long service in Iowa, thanks to injuries to his teammates, he finally made it into the squad in time for the playoffs and showed his qualities as a defensive striker , especially in the series against the Detroit Red Wings . Overall, the attacker remained in the Stars' franchise until his retirement in June 2014; the last two years of which exclusively in the Texas Stars farm team . With these he won the Calder Cup at the end of his career .
After retiring Petersen took a coaching position with the Springfield Falcons in the AHL, where he acted as an assistant coach. He filled the same position in the following season with the Lake Erie Monsters , with whom he succeeded in winning the Calder Cup again. After another year with the team, which has now been renamed Cleveland Monsters , he joined the Rochester Americans as an assistant coach for the 2017/18 season .
