After retiring Petersen took a coaching position with the Springfield Falcons in the AHL, where he acted as an assistant coach. He filled the same position in the following season with the Lake Erie Monsters , with whom he succeeded in winning the Calder Cup again. After another year with the team, which has now been renamed Cleveland Monsters , he joined the Rochester Americans as an assistant coach for the 2017/18 season .
