Ľubomír Vaic (born March 6, 1977 in Spišská Nová Ves , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Slovak ice hockey player who was mainly active in Europe during his career. In the Slovak extra league he played for HK Poprad , HK Spišská Nová Ves , HC Košice and HC Slovan Bratislava , in the Czech extra league for HC Sparta Prague , Bílí Tygři Liberec and Vsetínská hokejová and for HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk and SaiPa Lapeenranta .

Career

Ľubomír Vaic began his career as an ice hockey player with ŠKP PS Poprad , for which he made his debut in the Slovakian extra league in the 1993/94 season . After the season he signed a contract with his league rivals HK Spišská Nová Ves , with whom he then relegated to the first division . Therefore, the attacker switched to TJ VSŽ Košice , with whom he became Slovak champion in 1996 . He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1996 in the ninth round as a total of 227th player by the Vancouver Canucks . After Vaic initially stayed in Košice for another year, he made his debut in the National Hockey League for Vancouver in the 1997/98 season . However, he spent most of the season with their farm team , the Syracuse Crunch from the American Hockey League .

For the 1998/99 season Vaic returned to his Slovak homeland, where he was again champion with HC Košice . Then he got another chance in Vancouver, but could not prevail again in the NHL. In the 1999/2000 season he played only four games, in which he remained free of points and punishment. The rest of the season he was again on the squad of the Syracuse Crunch from the AHL. In the summer of 2000, the center moved to Western Europe for the first time, where it stood on the ice for one season for the Eisbären Berlin from the German Ice Hockey League . Even after that, the Slovak stayed abroad. This was followed by a year each at Vsetínská hokejová from the Czech extra league , SaiPa Lapeenranta from the Finnish SM-liiga and HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk from the Russian super league .

From 2004 to 2008 Vaic was again under contract in the Czech Extraliga, where he first played for three years for Bílí Tygři Liberec and then for one season for HC Sparta Prague . With Sparta he reached the final of the IIHF European Champions Cup in the 2007/08 season , in which he and his team lost 2: 5 to the Russian champions and his ex-club from Magnitogorsk. Before the 2008/09 season , Vaic returned to his Slovak homeland after ten years abroad, where he was signed by HC Slovan Bratislava , for which he scored three goals in four games in the group stage of the newly founded Champions Hockey League . In January 2011, the Slovak accepted an offer from VIK Västerås HK from HockeyAllsvenskan , for which the striker scored 13 points in 18 games. In June 2011 he received a one-year contract with HK Poprad . In the following years he changed several times between the HK Poprad and his hometown club, the HK Spišská Nová Ves, back and forth. He ended his career after the 2016/17 season.

International

For Slovakia , Vaic took part in the Junior C World Championship in 1994 , the U18 Junior European Championship in 1995 , and the Junior World Championships in 1996 and 1997 . He was also part of the Slovak squad at the 2000 , 2003 and 2006 World Championships .
