Martin Gaston Biron (* 15. August 1977 in Lac-Saint-Charles , Quebec ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player , who during his career for the Buffalo Sabers , Philadelphia Flyers , New York Islanders and New York Rangers in the National Hockey League active was. His brother Mathieu Biron is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Biron learned to play ice hockey in his home country at the Trois-Rivières Estacades in the Quebec Amateur Athletic Association . He then played for the Beauport Harfangs , part of the QMJHL (one of the three top junior couches in Canada). In his first year as number 1 between the posts of the Harfangs in 1994/95, he was able to emphatically prove his talent. At the age of 17 he led the league with an average goal against goal of 2.48. Biron was named QMJHL and CHL Goalkeeper of the Year . He was also the goalie of the First All-Star team . Because of this solid season performance, he was selected in the first round of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft in 16th place by the Buffalo Sabers .
In the 1995/96 season, Biron was on his way to play another excellent season for Beauport when he was suddenly called up by the Sabers to the NHL. Top goalkeeper Dominik Hašek had suffered an abdominal strain and the second back-up Robb Stauber was also injured, so the Sabers rookie called Steve Shields of the South Carolina Stingrays from the Central Hockey League to back up Andrei Trefilow in Buffalo serve. In the game against the Ottawa Senators on December 23, 1995, Trefilov pulled his knee so that the Sabers had no choice but to call 18-year-old Martin Biron from the junior league in the NHL. On December 26, Biron made his debut in the NHL against the Pittsburgh Penguins . At 18, Martin Biron was the fourth-youngest goalkeeper in NHL history to start a game on the grid. The game was lost 6-3 - he had to wait until March 1999 for his first NHL victory.
The remainder of this season and the first half of the following season he played again in Beauport before he was transferred to the Hull Olympiques , where he ended his time as a junior player. In the 1997/98 season Martin Biron stood between the posts of the Rochester Americans and played a good rookie season with a goal average of 2.93 (GAA) in 41 games and five shut-outs . At the end of the season he was named Rookie of the Year for the Amerks.
Biron's second season in Rochester, 1998/99, was even more impressive. In 52 games he achieved an average of 2.07 goals against - a new record in 60 years of the American Hockey League . He also broke an Amerks record - six shut-outs in one season. Therefore, he was nominated for the AHL All-Star Game. In the play-offs , he led the Amerks to the Calder Cup finals. At the end of the season he was named the Amerks MVP and Most Popular Player . He also won the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award , which is dedicated to the most outstanding goalkeeper in the AHL, and shared the Harry "Hap" Holmes Memorial Award for the lowest goal conceded with teammate Tom Draper . Biron also played six games for the Sabers with a GTS of 2.14 and his first win in the NHL against the Dallas Stars (2-1) on March 5, 1999. For these games he had to swap his number 00 for the 43, since the NHL regulations only allowed numbers between 1 and 98 from the 1998/99 season.
Initially, Biron was supposed to start the 1999/2000 season in Rochester, but the Sabers brought him to Buffalo in October to act as a back-up for Dominik Hašek. When Hašek injured his groin at the end of October, Biron was back between the Sabers' posts with Dwayne Roloson as back-up. During this time he celebrated his first NHL shut-out in a 4-0 win over the Atlanta Thrashers . Biron achieved another four shut-outs, so that he set a team record for the Sabers from 1976/77. Biron finished the season with an average of 2.42 (GAA) in a total of 41 games.
The 2000/01 season he was seven wins in 18 games, including two shut-outs celebrate at a Gegentorschnitt of 2.55 and 90.9% held shots - spent Biron as a back-up of Hašek. He also played four games for the Amerks, where he achieved another shut-out with three wins. After the season, the leadership of the Sabers decided after tough negotiations with Hašek to let him move to Detroit. This gave Biron the chance to become number 1 in the Sabers.
In the 2001/02 season he was able to more than compensate for the departure of his predecessor - he went on the ice 72 times for the Sabers and drew level with Hašek in terms of statistics. In the following two years the Sabers did not play very successfully and Martin Biron could not quite achieve these values, so his back-ups Mika Noronen and Ryan Miller often got the chance to prove themselves. During the lockout in the 2004/05 season , Martin Biron did not play professional ice hockey, while his back-ups were in use in the AHL and SM-liiga . This should prove to be a disadvantage for Biron, as he lost his regular seat to Ryan Miller during the 2005/06 season . He was only used in 35 games and scored an average of 2.88 goals against a catch rate of 90.5%, but was able to set an internal team record with 15 wins in a row. So he decided at the end of the season to ask the Sabers management for a change, but no other team seemed interested, so he signed a contract for another year in June 2006.
During the 2006/07 season , Biron continued to play as Ryan Miller's back-up goalie, but was often used when Miller was flagging. He caused a stir when he got into a fight with Ottawa's goalkeeper Ray Emery in February and was subsequently excluded from the game. A few hours before the end of the transfer window on February 27, 2007, he was transferred to the Philadelphia Flyers for a second-round draft pick for the 2007 NHL Entry Draft .
Between 2010 and October 2013 he was the backup goalkeeper behind Henrik Lundqvist for the New York Rangers before retiring from his career.
