Tomi Kristian Kallio (born January 27, 1977 in Turku ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with TPS in the Liiga since July 2015 .
Career
Tomi Kallio began his career as a hockey player in the youth of TPS Turku , for whose professional team he made his debut in the SM-liiga in the 1995/96 season . He was previously selected in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft in the fourth round as the 81st player of the Colorado Avalanche . However, this never got him to sign an NHL contract. Instead, the attacker won the European Hockey League with Turku in 1997 and was runner-up in 1996 and 1997, and Finnish champions for the first time in the 1998/99 season .
After Kallio had reached third place in the European Hockey League in the 1999/2000 season , he moved to North America , where he received a contract with the Atlanta Thrashers from the National Hockey League . The Thrashers selected the Finn from the Colorado Avalanche's pool of players in the 1999 NHL Expansion Draft . Kallio had to leave the young team from Atlanta after two years - at the beginning of the 2002/03 season - after the Thrashers had given him to the Columbus Blue Jackets in a four-player transfer deal . There he found his way just as little as with the Philadelphia Flyers , who had selected him from the waiver list a month after being transferred to the Blue Jackets . Kallio's engagement in Philadelphia ended after just three weeks when the winger was released from his contract in late January 2003 and ended the season at Frölunda HC in the Swedish Elitserien . That season he won the first Swedish championship title . With Frölunda Kallio won the Swedish championship again in the 2004/05 season .
After eight years, Kallio left Frölunda HC and joined its league rivals Växjö Lakers for the 2011/12 season , with whom he won the Swedish championship again in the 2014/15 season . In summer 2015 the Finn returned to his hometown club TPS in the Liiga .
International
For Finland , Kallio took part in the U18 European Junior Championships in 1995 , the U20 Junior World Championships in 1996 and 1997 , and the World Championships in 1999 , 2000 , 2001 , 2002 , 2004 , 2005 , 2006 and 2007 . He was also in Finland's squad at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . Overall, Kallio was able to win three silver and two bronze medals at international tournaments.
