Eric John Weinrich (born December 19, 1966 in Roanoke , Virginia ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach , who during his career played a total of 1238 games for the New Jersey Devils , Hartford Whalers , Chicago Blackhawks , Canadiens de Montréal , Boston Bruins , Philadelphia Flyers , St. Louis Blues and Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League . He is currently employed as an assistant coach for the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League . His brothers Alexander and Jason were also professional ice hockey players.
Career
Weinrich first played ice hockey from 1983 to 1985 at North Yarmouth Academy in the high school league system of the United States . During this time he was selected by the Buffalo Sabers in the ninth round of the 1984 NHL Entry Draft . Since Weinrich was too young for the Entry Draft, the election was declared void. A year later, in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft , the defensive player was approved for the first time in accordance with the rules for the draft and was selected in the second round at position 32 by the New Jersey Devils . In the following three seasons, the American was mainly active for the University of Maine ice hockey team , for which Weinrich ran up in Hockey East . During the 1988/89 season he made his debut for the New Jersey Devils in the NHL, but played mainly for their farm team , the Utica Devils , in the American Hockey League . A good rookie season was followed in the 1989/90 season by an excellent season with the Utica Devils in the AHL, when Weinrich scored twelve goals in 57 games and posted 48 assists . At the end of the season, his convincing performance was recognized with the Eddie Shore Award for best defender of the year and a nomination for the league's First All-Star Team . The following season Weinrich was accepted into the NHL roster of the Devils and he immediately made his breakthrough in the National Hockey League, so that he was elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team at the end of the season .
After another good season with the Devils, they gave him on August 28, 1992 in a barter deal with Sean Burke to the Hartford Whalers and received Bobby Holík and a second-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 1993 . In Hartford, the defender stayed a little over a year before he was transferred to the Chicago Blackhawks in November 1993 together with Patrick Poulin for Steve Larmer and Bryan Marchment . In Chicago, the defender was set as a regular for five seasons and reached in the shortened 1994/95 season with the Blackhawks the Conference Finals, in which they failed at the Detroit Red Wings . In November 1998 Weinrich was in a barter deal, which included a total of six players, given to the Canadiens de Montréal . At the beginning of the 2000/01 season Weinrich was briefly active as the team captain of the Habs , as Saku Koivu was unable to play due to an injury. For the Canadiens, the defensive player completed 60 NHL games before he transferred to the Boston Bruins in February 2001 in exchange for Patrick Traverse . For the Bruins, the American was on the ice in 22 games by the end of the season, then received no new contract and signed in July 2001 as a free agent with the Philadelphia Flyers . During his stint in Philadelphia, Weinrich hit 1,000 regular-season NHL games. In the course of the 2003/04 season , a transfer to the St. Louis Blues followed , in which the defender ended the season.
The following season, in which the game in the NHL was canceled due to a lockout, the American went on club level for the EC VSV in the Austrian ice hockey league and reached the runner-up in Austria with this after he had played with the EC VSV was inferior to the Vienna Capitals in seven encounters . When the game was resumed in the NHL for the following season, Weinrich was again on the ice for the St. Louis Blues. They handed it over to the Vancouver Canucks for the trade deadline on March 9, 2006 . After 16 games for the Canucks, he declared his playing career over on August 4, 2006. At the beginning of the 2006/07 season he first worked as an assistant coach for the Portland Pirates from the American Hockey League under Kevin Dineen and decided in January 2007 to return to the ice as an active player, so that the defender took the role of player coach in Portland. He completed these tasks until the end of the 2007/08 season and Weinrich decided to end his playing career for good. In August 2008, he received a contract as an assistant coach with the Portland Pirates.
International
Weinrich represented his home country both in the junior and senior sector on the international stage.
The defender played for the first time at the Junior World Championship in 1985 . He was also a year later at the Junior World Championship in 1986 in the squad of the US team , which surprisingly won the bronze medal.
For the senior selection of the Americans, Weinrich first appeared in the squad at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary , after he had prepared for the tournament for much of the previous season in the service of the USA Hockey Association . Ultimately, however, he only plays three games during the tournament. Three years later, the defender completed two international competitions. On the one hand, he was on the ice at the 1991 World Cup and a few weeks later he won the silver medal with the US boys at the prestigious Canada Cup . This was followed by another appearance at the world championship in 1993 , which was just as unsuccessful as his participation in all world championships between 1997 and 2002 . It was not until the 2004 World Cup that Weinrich was able to adorn himself with precious metal again, this time winning bronze. He made his last international appearance a few months later at the World Cup of Hockey 2004 .
