Michael Mayer began his career in the youth teams of the EC VSV and also played in the farm team Telekom Austria, which the club maintained together with the EC KAC in the second highest Austrian league, the National League . However, he only gained his first experience in professional ice hockey after switching to EV Zeltweg , which, however, began relegation after the 2000/01 season. Mayer remained loyal to the club for a year before Bundesliga club EHC Linz signed him for the role of substitute goalkeeper. In the next four years he only came to sporadic missions behind the Czech Pavel Nešťák and was only able to gain further experience in the club's short-lived farm team. In 2006 he finally moved to the Vienna Capitals , where he did not, however, play a major role.
In 2007 Mayer returned to the second division and played for two years at the KSV ice hockey club , which, however, played only a subordinate role in the league due to a lack of quality in the squad and in 2009 even voluntarily relegated to the third division, the Oberliga . Mayer moved to the Styrian local rival EV Zeltweg, who, however, also moved to the league in the same summer. There, however, he was ousted from the position of first goalkeeper towards the end of the season by Markus Stolz . Mayer has been playing for the Austrian fourth division club EC SV Spittal since 2010.
