Gregory Gordon Holst (born February 21, 1954 in Montreal ) is a former Austrian - Canadian ice hockey player and today's coach . His sons Michael and Taylor are also professional ice hockey players.
Career
Holst began his career as a hockey player with the University of New Brunswick team , the UNB Varsity Reds , with whom he played for the Canadian University Championship . In 1973 he moved to the Kingston Canadians , for whom he played for a year. In 1974 he was drafted twice: In the NHL Amateur Draft , the New York Rangers selected him in round eight in 139th place, while in the WHA Amateur Draft of the competing professional league World Hockey Association he was selected by the San Diego Mariners in the seventh round as 95 . Player was drawn. First, however, he played for the Winston-Salem Ice Hawks from the Southern Professional Hockey League and the Port Huron Flags from the International Hockey League . For the season 1975/76 he was then appointed to the squad of his NHL draft club New York Rangers, for which he played eleven games. In the American Hockey League he played for the Providence Reds and the New Haven Nighthawks . In the 1975/76 season he was the third best scorer in the AHL behind Jean-Guy Gratton and Ron Andruff and was awarded the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award as the best rookie in the league . In the 1978/79 season he went to Europe, first in the German Bundesliga in Mannheim . From there he moved to Innsbrucker EV , other player stations were Vienna , Salzburg, Villach and Graz .
As a national player, he took part in a total of four B World Championships in 1982 , 1983 , 1985 and 1986 , scoring 15 goals and 15 assists for the Austrian national team . Greg Holst scored a total of 522 goals in the Austrian Bundesliga and is only surpassed by another Austro-Canadian, Rick Nasheim , who scored 545 goals. There are also 506 assists, so that he is also in second place in the all-time points list.
Trainer
After the 1992/93 season he ended his career as an active player and went back to Canada, where he founded an ice hockey school in Kelowna. In 1997 he returned to Austria and started as a coach in Wattens (Regionalliga). In addition, he coached the offspring of Innsbruck and the U20 and U18 national team and was assistant coach of the national team under coach Ron Kennedy .
In the 2002/03 season he was the first coach of a Bundesliga team, Villacher SV. With the club he achieved the championship title in 2006. He was able to reach the final three times with his team, but failed at Innsbruck, Linz and Salzburg. In 2008/09 he coached the Innsbrucker HC. In the 2011/12 season he was behind the gang at the Italian first division club Ritten Sport .
On November 9, 2015, he was reappointed the coach of the EC VSV, where the Finn Hannu Järvenpää had been dismissed a few days earlier . His contract ran until the end of the 2015/16 season. The VSV then announced that it would extend Greg Holst as head coach of the fighting team for two more seasons, and he will keep the club's youth work.
On December 3, 2017, his contract with the VSV was terminated after the team could not show the desired success.
On November 12, 2018, EK Zell am See announced that Greg Holst would be the coach of the gang in the future.
