Darcy Werenka (* 13. May 1973 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player with Austrian citizenship , the more than 500 games in the Austrian Hockey League has completed, but also in other top European leagues and the American Hockey League was active .
Career
Darcy Werenka began his career with the Sherwood Park Crusaders in the Alberta Junior Hockey League . From 1989 to 1993 he played in the Western Hockey League , one of the three major Canadian youth leagues , for the Lethbridge Hurricanes and finally for the Brandon Wheat Kings . After he was elected to the Second All-Star team of the Eastern Conference in 1991, chose him New York Rangers in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft in the second round than a total of 37 players. The Rangers put him in the following years in their farm team Binghamton Rangers , for which he completed 143 games in the American Hockey League until 1995 . The following two years he played for various teams in the International Hockey League .
In 1997 the defender moved to Europe for the first time and played for two years at Wiener EV in the Austrian ice hockey league . He then played in the United States with the Utah Grizzlies again in the IHL. In 2000 he came back to Europe, first to Finland to Hämeenlinnan Pallokerho and then in 2001 to the Schwenninger Wild Wings . In 2002 he went to the Cologne Sharks for a year . From 2003 to 2010 he played again for the Vienna Capitals in the ÖEHL. In 2005 he was appointed captain of the Vienna team with which he had previously won the Austrian championship . In the championship season as well as in the 2006/07 season , the top scorer was among the defenders. For the 2010/11 season he moved to the EC Graz 99ers . He left this after a year and joined the Dragons de Rouen from the French Ligue Magnus for the 2011/12 season , with whom he won the IIHF Continental Cup and the French championship in 2012 . In January 2013 he joined the third highest Austrian league with the Kapfenberg Bulls and reached the playoff final of the National Amateur Hockey League with them , which was lost to EC Tarco Wölfe Klagenfurt . Then he ended his career.
International
In the junior division Werenka still played for Canada and won the gold medal with the U20 selection of his country at the 1993 World Cup .
On April 16, 2008 he received Austrian citizenship and on the same day, at the World Cup of Division I , he played his first game for the Austrian national team , where he was named the most valuable player of the evening. Also in 2010 he played in Division I. After both times he was promoted, he played in the top division in 2009 and 2011 , but had to accept immediate relegation. He also represented the Alpine nationals at the qualifying tournament for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver .
