Aki-Petteri Arvid Berg (born July 28, 1977 in Raisio ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who was most recently under contract with TPS Turku in the Finnish SM-liiga .
Career
Aki-Petteri Berg began his career as an ice hockey player at TPS Turku , for which he was active in the SM-liiga from 1993 to 1995 . During this time he was once runner-up and once champion with his team. Then the defender was selected in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft in the first round as the third player overall by the Los Angeles Kings . For the Lings he initially ran from 1995 to 1998 in the National Hockey League , as well as from 1995 to 1997 for their farm team , the Phoenix Roadrunners , in the International Hockey League . For the 1998/99 season , the defender returned to his Finnish homeland, where he was again champion with Turku. Then Berg played another year and a half in the NHL for the Los Angeles Kings, who gave him to their league rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs , during the 2000/01 season .
For the Canadians, Berg was on the ice for the next five seasons. Only during the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season did the left-shooter play for Timrå IK from the Swedish Elitserien . In the summer of 2006, the Finn finally returned to Turku for the third time, for which he was active in the SM-liiga until the end of the 2010/11 season . The defender, who was temporarily active as team captain of TPS, declared his playing career ended on July 28, 2011 due to a knee injury.
International
For Finland Berg took part in the U18 Junior European Championship in 1995 and the U20 Junior World Championship in 1997 , as well as the World Cup of Hockey 2004 . He was also in Finland's squad at the 1999 , 2000 , 2001 , 2003 , 2006 and 2007 World Championships , as well as at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano , 2002 in Salt Lake City and 2006 in Turin .
