Marek Židlický (born February 3, 1977 in Most , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player and current coach who played 885 games for the Nashville Predators , Minnesota Wild , New Jersey Devils , Detroit during his active career between 1994 and 2016 Red Wings and New York Islanders has contested in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Židlický became world champion with the Czech national team in 2005 .

Career

Marek Židlický began his career at HC Rabat Kladno and was selected during the NHL Entry Draft 2001 in the sixth round in 176th place by the New York Rangers .

In contract negotiations between the Rangers and Židlický it came to differences, since a separate salary for the National Hockey League and one for the American Hockey League is common. Since the wage differences are enormous, Židlický wanted a single salary at the NHL level. The aim was not only to get a high salary if he played in the AHL, but also that the Rangers would be obliged to let him play in the NHL more often. The Rangers refused to accept it and offered him the usual two-pronged contract. But Židlický refused and continued to play in the Finnish league for Helsingfors IFK .

Since the Rangers did not grant him a one-way contract, he was given to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Mike Dunham with Rem Murray and Tomáš Klouček . The Predators agreed with Židlický's demands and gave him a fixed salary. This should also pay off, as Zidlicky played in all 82 regular season games for the Predators in the 2003/04 season. However, the 53 points in his first season were not considered a rookie record because he had already passed the age limit of 26 years.

During the lockout, Židlický played again in Finland for Helsingfors IFK. In the 2005/06 season he came to 49 points in 67 games, and due to his good performance, it was no great surprise that the Predators immediately offered him a four-year contract. Židlický accepted the $ 13.5 million contract. His greatest success in 2006 was winning the bronze medal with the Czech team at the Olympic Winter Games in Turin .

In the summer of 2008 he was transferred to the Minnesota Wild for Ryan Jones and a second-round suffrage in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft . This gave him just before the trade deadline , on 24 February 2012, in exchange for Kurtis Foster , Nick Palmieri , Stephane Veilleux , a second-round vote in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and a performance-related third-round vote in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft to the New Jersey Devils ex.

After almost three years in New Jersey, the Devils handed him over to the Detroit Red Wings in March 2015 and in return received a third-round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft . In addition, it was agreed that New Jersey should receive an additional five-round voting right (or second-round voting right) in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft , if Detroit reaches the conference final (or Stanley Cup final) in the play-offs. However, neither of these happened.

After the end of the season Židlický did not get a new contract in Detroit and therefore joined the New York Islanders in September 2015 , with whom he signed a one-year contract.

He ended his career after the 2015/16 season. Since summer 2018 he has been in charge of the Czech U18 national youth team as assistant coach to Alois Hadamczik .
